Think I might have to try this just 'cause it's there. Could be built into a most obscure streets / not Lothian Road tour. On the otherside I have used the lanes beside Lyceum to get up to and beyond Tollcross. One bit involves an almost legal crossing of a one way street.

For anyone wondering what use the addition of cycle-markings along the Canning St - EICC-car-park-entrace section of the WAR could be:

A: You can get directly from Morrison St to the WAR:
Enter the entrance slope into the magic automatic car park (deceased) between SWIP and the EICC/ATRIA extension.
Turn right into the magic automatic car park.
Turn immediately left to join the exit slope.
Turn left at the bottom and proceed west, watching out in every direction for delivery vehicles, until you reach the two-lane exit point to get onto the WAR.
Ride around in a small circle in the left-hand (westbound WAR, so motor-vehicle-only) exit lane until the traffic lights detect you, then escape to the eastbound WAR exit-filter.

Alternatively, you could go east to the Sheraton/Conference Square/Exchange Crescent car-park access section and either get onto the WAR/Canning St that way or run up some stairs to either Festival Square or Conference Square.

B: You can get indirectly from slightly further east along Morrison St to the WAR:
Go down Chuckie Pend between Macdonald Cycles and whatever the premises on the other side currently are, as if you're going to go behind the Filmhouse to Festival Square.

Beyond the end of the cobbled bit, where the path narrows between a shrubbery and the side of the building on the south side of Festival Square, look for a short desire-line path on the left leading to a small corral of skips and bins. Follow the footway down a slope past the bins, then repeat the steps above for not being flattened by a lorry and extracting yourself from the EICC delivery area.
It would also be possible to go from the WAR to Chuckie Pend by reversing this path after going along the new cycle lane westwards from the Canning St/WAR junction.

It doesn't look technically legally possible to go from the WAR to Morrison St by going up the magic automatic car park exit slope as you would be defying the arrows painted on the road.

Um.

It's not that bad. I have to confess I have used the WAR during the fun and games at Haymarket as a short cut to the Market on Saturday...my entirely specious justification is that if you get on from the Toucan at Morrison Crescent there aren't any No Cycling signs...and it does save me a lot of time. The bus lane is wide, and cars avoid it, so it feels a lot safer than it probably is.

An unexpected consequence of this is ASLs at the Canning St junction. Initial observations suggest that drivers are not expecting them to be there and are therefore ignoring them.

No but the big hole that caused my detour one year ago is now another conference centre next to the EICC and the route from Lothian road past all bar one is reinstated, see CHdot post. We were vociferously agitating for return of racks to side of EICC when trialling the new conference centre the other week.

Nope, the entire city centre has not been closed off to all motorised traffic in order to put a wee bit of paint along the gutter like the Scotsman said it would. So that can't be it.

Isn't it bizarre when a bit of cycling infrastructure is built that no-one was asking for or expecting...? Maybe it will be this years surprise hit!

Design wise it will have to go some to be as unusable as the zig-zag pram ramp at the WAR crossing. Hopefully it bypasses that. That actually merits a no-cycling sign.

Think we should have a basic rule on two way cycle routes that means two bicycles can get by each other ... I know it goes against the low standards of some existing paths (eg North Meadows and the NCN 1 beside A90) but if cycling ever did reach the levels desired these paths would not work.

From the end of the Western Approach Road at Lothian Rd I used to cycle between the Sheraton Hotel and All Bar One through the open Square then on to Morrison St and on to Gardiner's Crescent to access Canal. There is an underground carpark approx 175m down the Western Approach Rd heading West and a right turn just beyond at traffic lights that takes you back towards Canning St and Rutland Sq etc. I cannot picture the existing 95m of whin kerbing. Tried the link to page 13-14 of council document but came up as unavailable.

I currently avoid this area as once beyond All BAr One there is a big detour around the building site and you need to get off and push the bike

I still can't envisage this lane or understand the point in it and why it's worthy of the £45,000 pounds being spent on it. I'd say "couldn't they make the EICC pay?", but then the council are already paying for most of the expansion there, so it would be a Peter and Paul scenario.

I will have to ponder it later on.

Is 'Tollcross' more extensive than hitherto suspected, being effectively contiguous with 'the West End' in the Scotchman's lexicon?

I expect this lane will be of no advantage to anyone wanting to get from Lothian Road to Canning Street but I wonder if it'll still result in beepings and shoutings to get into the lane?

175 metres is the distance from junction with Canning St west as far as the bridge where Morrison St passes overhead. From Canning St to the 'ridiculous chicane' is about 580 metres.

As far as I can tell he proposal is to establish a cycle lane from Lothian Road along the Western Approach Road to the basement entrance to the EICC. Details on page 13-14 of this document:

https://citydev-portal.edinburgh.gov.uk/idoxpa-web/files/D96CDE689E25DADEC28765ECE21A24B9/pdf/09_01314_FUL-TRANSPORT_ADDITION_INFO-905845.pdf

The reason for the new lane is that cyclists would have had to carry their bikes down a flight of stairs to get into the car park if access had to be taken from Morrison Street.

So does this mean one could cycle from Lothian Road to the toucan crossing at the Springside lane which runs between Fountainbridge and Morrison Circus? (The one with the ridiculous chicane at the bottom)

I've always wanted to cycle along there. Mainly to have a root about the old railway bridge.

Looks likely. I can imagine the Scotsman creating a ridiculous story out of an invitation to tender like that.

I can't find any details of this on the council's website (there would normally be a document showing the planned works). As SRD points out, the Scotsman has probably been deliberately ambiguous to get the Clarksonites frothing - it's likely that a single lane is going to be closed, and only while the works are actually carried out.
