I'm step-D'OH like the noise homer simpson makes. Mainly due to the fact a REFUUUSE to shorten my name to the v-variant contraction and Steph sounds a wee bit girly. (No offence to v-varienters and/or girls)

I think Cyclingmollie changed to Tom for similar reasons :)

Being trained in shorthand really helps in the modern world, cos the first thing your brain does is drop all the vowels.

Can I suggest Amff?

Actually, yes. Became a nickname at football, but only because we had a wee penalty competition the same day the Scottish cup had gone to penalties, and I missed, just like Anton Rogan had...

I assumed it was French... Chroo-reeeev-ay.... ;)

@anth, that's definitely a north east thing. I was always taught that even if spelled Anthony, one should pronounce An-ton-i. You know, Marcus Antonius, the Antonine wall, etc.

Anyone ever call you Anton? Then you could go all Germanic like Herr Über who was the cause of this thread.

Surely there's no confusion over the pronunciation of my handle, which also has an Irish reference.

Most definitely not 'Ant' and most certainly 'Anth' as my name is not 'Antony' but rather very 'th' pronounced 'Anthony'.

[EDIT - as far as I understand it the rendering to 'Anth' is a north-east England thing, place of my birth, and all my relatives there, plus schoolfriends from Aberdeenshire, call me that - I became 'Tony' at uni through no attempt of my own, and my other half knows me as that as it continued into my work life as I started at the same firm as a couple of my uni peers. I shifted int he last two jobs deliberately back to 'Anthony', and in the last job worked with a guy from the north-east of England who, without forewarning, called me 'Anth']

@Greenroofer: you were alas a victim of my terrible diction, not helped by the fact that the ASC is hardly a library in terms of background noise. Either way, the Y sound sneaked in erroneously.
ExcitableBoy had the same pronunciation in mind, so you're not alone. I wonder if either or both of you studied Italian?

As chdot says, it's uber ooce, in the Germanic mould, but if florid hand gestures and espresso are involved, I'll happily answer to the Italian.

I met Uberuce in real life yesterday. We exchanged greetings. I said I was Greenroofer on the forum, and he said he was YouBruce.

I walked away from the conversation thinking 'You're not YouBruce. I've always known you in my mind as Ooberoochay' (think Liberace).

Some names on the forum are obvious: you can't go far wrong with Dave, and I assume DaveC isn't pronounced Day-veck. I assume too that SRD doesn't favour the pronunciation Surd over Ess-Are-Dee. Similarly, I assume it's Ant, and not An-th.

For a long time I thought we had someone called Ree-com-bod-na on the forum, and in fact I still favour that rendering.

I've frankly no idea what sounds to make for Bhachgen.

Am I alone in this, or do we need a guide where the owners of potentially confusing pronunciations give a definitive view on how they like to be known?

...or does that spoil the fun?
