Cycling in Lycra? Nah I just cycle in my normal clothes, and maybe change my top when I get there. I don't even wear bike clips nor stuff my trousers into my socks since I ride a real proper bike that is made for real life cycling.

Also Wee Eck can use the excuse that the plant made regarding cycling lycra clad warriors being off putting. Seeing AS dressed in lycra would most definitely be off putting, sheesh!!!

No mention of cycling in Stewart Stevenson's hobbies, I rest my case, me lud. Wee Eck will undoubtedly not be seen on a bicycle, far too utilitarian for him now.

<quote> It's important to try get 'cycling' away from 'just' Transport.</quote>

Indeed. But getting cycling taken more seriously *within* transport seems like a good first step.

After all, it's surely "transport" that has to deliver the wider benfits of cycling to policy areas such as "health".

Or a meringue? ;)

"When parliamentary committees identify a need for "strong leadership", aren't they normally pointing the finger at the minister whose portfolio they're commenting on?"

Good/valid point.

He has a boss (JS), who has a boss (AS)

It's important to try get 'cycling' away from 'just' Transport.

Unlikely I believe he takes taxis from Linlithgow to Edinburgh because of a bad back meaning he can't stand on the train in rush hour...
but he is just one guy, plenty people across all parties are cyclists, I would be interested, though, to hear how many cycle from Parliament to meetings elsewhere in town

My MSP is Karen Whitefield. She was moaning about busses on her blog so I checked her expenses. Thousands of pounds for car travel, none on busses. I suggested that a good way to support busses would be for her to use them. I also suggested she could get a bike but she is an even less likely figure for that than Mr Salmond.

That seems a reasonable question to ask when The Scottish Parliament Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change Committee's "Inquiry into Active Travel" concludes by saying -

"Stronger, more effective and sustained leadership is required from the Scottish Government in order to implement improvements to walking and cycling policies in Scotland."

http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/s3/committees/ticc/reports-10/trr10-04.htm

Finance Minister John Swinney occasionally rides for leisure but he has managed to resist calls by Spokes (and others) for increased spending on cycle infrastructure.

So perhaps it doesn't matter if the First Minister rides a bike - though it might be good for his health!
