@chdot, somebody made that point yesterday on Radio McScotland. It seems England has £40 per child to do cycle training (though presumably whether it happens or not is down to the school/local authority).

"he did comment on the disparity between the 1% cycling funding and the 10% modal share target, saying he'd like to see the funding up nearer the 10% mark"

Yes that was good.

I'm sure he'd also like Bikeability Scotland (cycle training) to be properly funded too rather than having to do campaigns calling for volunteers.

NO - him!

"Perhaps I was harsh"

No.

"Does the cycling Scotland chap ride to work?"

I think so. (As in - I'm quite sure he cycles rather than doesn't, but don't know anything about his actual work journey).

Dave was particularly happy that they used one of his video clips that wasn't him almost being killed (his video of a truck driver almost squashing him on a roundabout really is truly shocking) but rather a video of him filtering past miles and miles of cars.

Given that Cycling Scotland is a government quango, he could not be too critical. However he did comment on the disparity between the 1% cycling funding and the 10% modal share target, saying he'd like to see the funding up nearer the 10% mark. I thought that was a good point that needed to be made.

Me? Sorry. Perhaps I was harsh. But I would have liked to have seen some enthusiasm and energy. It felt tired; I felt tired. david Brennan was clearly trying v. hard and had given some thought to the message he was trying to put across. Would have been nice to see some synergy. Does the cycling Scotland chap ride to work?

Not sure how much he can do in public apart from point out the Government's '10% "modal share" by 2020 policy.

I was unimpressed by the cycling scotland guy. he was the one who should ahve been challenging stuff - but he left that the David Brennan (who _did_ challenge the viewer input, and made a point about it). he also emphasized the 'cycling is fun' positive angle. The cycling scotland guy seemed to have no agenda, no lobbying, rather lame. I suppose being calm is a strategy?

I thought I recognised the blogger David Brennan? He was fine. He could have challenged the tweets and texts but time was running out. He remained very smiley and the Cycle Scotland guy also very calm. I think this strategy is good counterpoint to the rantings of some commenters

Skip through 14 mins of Rangers news unless you're a supporter, then 7 mins of the cycling feature. Not a bad wee programme segment, if I'm honest. Quick opinions from Alison Johnstone, Gordon Mackenzie and Ian Maxwell in the VT feature. Fairly balanced. Guy from Cycling Scotland was quite good in the discussion afterwards, as was the cycling blogger. Viewer's tweets and texts were depressing though!

I caught end of it. Mentioned that cycling was an Alpha Male activity. Cycle lanes are poorly designed if at all. Usual cyclists breaking the law 'feelgood' stuff.

People (including some spokes people for cycling) always seem to miss the fact that running reds by cars is an everyday occurrence.
I would be more impressed if they had an investigation into why some drivers are still on the road despite having more than 12 points on their licence.

From other thread -

"Rumours circulating around the ether that Scotland Tonight news programme (1030, STV) will feature a slot dedicated to cycling safety"

Seems true.

Got email earlier (been out, only just going through them).

"
I work on STV's evening current affairs show Scotland Tonight. We are looking to have a chat on tonight's show after calls for cycle safety summit following the death of a fourth cyclist in Edinburgh. Is this something that one of your contributors may be interested in taking part in? I have been reading your blog with interest.

I can be contacted on this email address or 0141 300 3238.
The programme is on-air at 10.30pm at STV's studio at Pacific Quay in Glasgow.

"

So if anyone else fancies this (and being in Glasgow) try the number, might still be looking for 'the right person'.
