We already have a massive Tesco but getting to it from Pinkie (by car, natch) is not going to be pleasant as the High Street is already congested. It is, of course a short cycle and maybe a ten minute walk. If there are 118 afordable homes being built then perhaps there won't be too many two and three car families.

"to look at the cycling infrastructure"

Good

But

"after East Lothian planning chiefs approved an application"

There's someone here in the Honest Toun who is trying to gather a few interested people together to look at the cycling infrastructure with the aim of providing some adfice to the Council and developers (if I've understood him correctly). This is being supported by Spokes. If that does happen then who knows?

I fear the latter. One only has to look at the recently built housing estates between Dunfermline and Inverkeithing. The only shopping nearby is a massive Tesco. They did provide quite a few cycle paths, mostly shared use / slightly segregated paths, some on road, but very few cyclists using them on the times I've been (a relative lives there). Everyone drives everywhere, except for a few kids and the odd adult cyclist (literally and figuratively).

"We might at this rate get, who knows, a deli or even a book shop"

Or you might get an(other?) edge of town supermarket for all the new home owners who drive into Edinburgh on the bypass??

That must be in the land between Pinkie and Inveresk. Quite close to where we began planting a community garden on Saturday:

This is good for Musselburgh. We might at this rate get, who knows, a deli or even a book shop :) Last Friday a Costa opened in the High Street. I went in on Saturday but their coffee machine had broken down.

@crowriver - The planning allocations are already in place for a huge increase in housing in Midlothian, especially along the railway.

http://www.midlothian.gov.uk/info/198/planning_policy/489/the_current_development_plan_for_midlothian

Map 2 shows Gorebridge/Newtongrange basically doubling in size.

"
Scottish Government ‏ @scotgov

Hundreds of new affordable homes: Taxpayers’ benefit as innovative scheme delivers first homes.

http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2012/03/affordablehousing08032012

"

The "innovative" refers to the 'financing', don't know if there is anything innovative about the houses/development.

Nice.

As well as building in neighbourliness, it's useful to build in local facilities esp shops in these huge estates, to encourage walking etc.

It would be good if councils would be more ambitious in creating good living environments. In talks with one official from Midlothian council, it seemed that they certainly do not feel ambitious being a relatively small council. They could do with a strong lead from the government and some good examples of practice.

Edinburgh's dormitory belt expands. Didn't see anything about cycle facilities, just improved parks and roads. I suppose once the Borders railway is up and running the commuter zone will spread further south...
