It's taken as contractural. Unless you work in a call-centre job, then you aren't allowed off the leash without permission.

"8 daily paid <strike>cycling</strike> smoking breaks" - is it that formalised?

@chdot that's the one. Unfortunately all these new "no smoking in the grounds" rules have turned it into a refuge for our office smokers who shamefully sit on the steps stinking the place out and drop their butts on and around it. Also turn some of the bus shelters on South Gyle crescent into no-go areas when it's cold/wet/windy.

I've raised it with our facilities people and they're in a bit of a bind - there are plenty signs up all around our office and grounds saying where you can and can't smoke and they're largely ignored, but we can at least enforce it there. The directors standing infront of the NO SMOKING signs just outside the back door having a cigarette don't really help. The Paolozzi is public pavement so there's nothing we can do. I did make a complaint to council last summer and some wardens did appear and hand out a few spot notices. But it's soon forgotten about.

Harrumph. Sack the lot of them I say. I don't get 8 daily paid cycling breaks whenever I fancy one to feed my addiction - why should the smokers?

There's a massive piece outside my work at the Gyle, with an Einstein quote on the side called The Wealth of Nations. The largely nationalised financial services institution I work for was obviously a fan. When I first joined there was masses of prints and a few originals all over our building. I think those adorning the walls of the canteen were largely lost on the pie-and-chip eating population. They've mostly disappeared now, I guess either sold off or lent out as part of the art-lending charm offensive. We've got lousy corporate posters up now instead.

Eduardo Paolozzi is probably the most famous artist born in Edinburgh. His sculptures can be seen in various places - including the Museum of Scotland in Chambers Street.

Edinburgh secondary school pupils now have a new prize to aim for. (Details)

The idea was floated 5 years ago by Councillor Paul Edie
