We've just been told that, of the 17 Lib Dem council candidates in Edinburgh, only 2 are women. A lot of Lib Dem members must be uneasy.

@Dave, to be fair it would seem excessive to introduce compulsion when the current system seems to be working so well. The option is there to wear if people want to, or not if they don't. No-one is reporting swathes of injured Boris bikers lying about the road, so imho best left at: wear one if you want, don't if you don't. (And that is everything I wish to say on te h****t discussion here!)

Livingston is pro hat. You can't promote cycling and hats.

To be fair, now that they're quite well established, it might not be a bad thing to mandate helmets on the Boris Bikes. There is an insane amount of data on the movements of the bikes between docking points, so chasing and fining casual users would produce a huge amount of real data on the effect.

I thought of a smart idea, that they could have the bikes unlock only if you also presented an RFID tag which they could sell you to keep on your (well fitting, EN-approved and up to date, or you can't buy a tag) helmet. Then it would ensure universal use, because you physically couldn't get the bike off unless you were armoured up.

Ah, so not original Flying Scots, ie. pre-1983. If they were built by Dave Yates then they were from Lincoln, not Newcastle.

It is a marque that could do with a revival, I think. Wonder if a Scottish entrepreneur or frame builder would buy the name? I see Dales Cycles is still going, I'm surprised they haven't revived 'The Scot' and 'Flying Scot'. If they used quality frames they could do a roaring trade with club riders and CTC members...

I note the new Shand cycles steel frame is due to be launched this week.

My second Flying Scot rolled out of Dales in February '92 so it must have been one of the last ones. As far as I know it's one of only two Flying Scot MTBs. The other one was mottled grey and went to a guy in Shawlands. They completely changed the transfers sometime in '90-'91 so I wonder if they expected to keep the name going for longer.

"Ken Livingston isn't very pro bike"

Don't think that's really true. He doesn't ride - says he has a balance problem...

He's certainly more bothered about The Tube - but more people use it than cycle.

Boris is 'concerned' about buses. He got the bendy-buses taken out of service - though it seems they were more scary than actually dangerous.

He got this made -

Also a politician should be forward looking as well as an upholder of traditional values (and pipe smoking).
I rather thought something like this:

I think Boris's public bike riding - combined with the utter mess he's made of the cycle 'super'highways - is what's got the cyclists so riled up. He's very much of the school of 'I can ride a bike, so can everyone else', regardless of the fact that not everyone is willing to plunge around Elephant and Castle 'keeping their wits about them'. Bearing in mind that the 'Boris bikes' were actually initiated by Ken Livingstone, it does show that having a cycling politician is not all it's cracked up to be.

That said, someone should get Alex Salmond a Paperbike.

[quote]-You mean my LHT's not a proper bike unless I fit an oilbath?

As a Crosscheck owner I would have to give the LHT grudging approval. Alex would have to have something more dignified though- befitting a statesman. This would clearly need to be dark green & have an oilbath. Something you would feel comfortable smoking a pipe on whilst riding.

Did 'we' ever resolve 'best oil for a bike chain'?

New thread??

Er, yes. As long as it was a proper bike- oilbath, rack, mudguards. Bicycle clips. If he appeared on a Brompton I would swing towards the Greens.

a picture of AS on a bike

Is that at all likely? Helicopters, yes; ministerial limos, certainly; AS does not do bikes.
