I assume the author counts the (let's say) 25km of bus lanes (full of buses and, worse, taxis) and 50km of useless paint that you can park / wait in towards her total of 75km of on-road "cycle lanes". Let's just be clear that there are almost no cycle-exclusive on-road lanes in Edinburgh.

But...

Things should improve for cyclists. But also for motorists, as the Pedal on Parliament organisers campaigning for better road safety understand that the roads are to be shared, rather than adopting the same old angry adversarial stance: two wheels good, four wheels bad.

Anger is a waste of energy. It won’t get you anywhere quicker. Let the cyclist go past, let the pedestrian cross, let the car overtake. The message for all road users should literally be live and let live.

Is quite a fitting and optimistic ending. Although it kind of insinuates that cyclists deliberately block / get in the way of cars. As "we" know, in traffic, exactly the opposite is the case.

Nice article, especially as it's written by a non-cyclist.

Sometimes I have optimism. Sure, proclaiming to the world that it's a warzone and your mild-mannered cyclist(!) friends will ram other cyclists in their cars if they get stuck in traffic (!!) isn't really going to sell it as a lifestyle choice, but the attitude is promising.

I know... it's sometimes that the small percentage and the big mileage of cycleways is used by some to say 'give them no more'.

With the overall 'why can't cycling be normal' debate we are up against so many factors.

• Cars are considered an essential - like having a fridge
• Every day the next generation is being driven by their parents and shown how (not) to treat other road users.
• When did you last see a bike being used normally in a film or drama? (other than Borgen)
• Electric cars are coming - unfortunately 25 metric tons of CO2 are used in their production and another 30-40 in their lifetime. (Which could be just as short as any other car.)

Gina Davidson also wrote another 'transport' piece recently -

"
However, like it or not, the one change which worked spectacularly well was Greenways. Passenger numbers soared as buses were able to get around much more quickly. Drivers hated them, but they did the trick – and proved that if public transport could be efficient, clean and punctual then people would use it. As a result, Lothian Buses has become the most successful bus company in the UK.

"

"
Perhaps Keith Brown has such a vision. Perhaps someone at Transport Scotland does. Perhaps somewhere within the council there is someone desperate to show those in power what could be done. Perhaps, say it quietly, we need a new David Begg.

I'm not sure the 2% is still true.

Clearly it gets higher as you get closer to (but not on!) Princes Street.

But let's say it's 4% - long way off '15% by 2020'.

"but drivers too need to accept that cyclists have rights on the roads"

I think it's quite a useful article.

"I hope the commenters don't find this one tucked away in the editorials."

I know what you mean, but if people do and type their usual stuff perhaps EN will 'notice' a bit more.

Apparently we're at war... Gina Davidson's states that bikes account for less than 2% of trips in capital juxtaposed with 150km of off road and on road cycleways. Think these are old stats.

More will die... etc

Comments haven't started yet. Maybe they should keep them turned off!

Lead story on my paper edition is the hit and run on a 13 year old on way to school. The crazy mob have turned their guns on this...

Oh... 'road tax' is mentioned but at least it isn't capitlalised.
