I think that is my point. As technically Sauchiehall St is in the centre of Glasgow and the M8 bisects Sauchiehall St then the motorway goes right through the centre of the city. Not something to be proud of. Cowcaddens was a vibrant locality pre 1960s. I think there is an Alasdair Gray painting indicating this.

Nope, doesn't feel like it, but technically orbits, rather than cuts a swathe through. Think a good definition is that it chops St Vincent Street and Sauchiehall street in half.

"only trans-urban open motorway"

Depends on detail of definition(?)

M6 through Birmingham?

Gembo, i think the M8 is the only trans-urban open motorway in the uk. Most usually dump onto a roads once you get inside an orbital.

Well I have never measured them both but the M58 ring road in Leeds may be as close if not closer. have a look on the map to see how close if runs round the north of the city centre. The saving grace in Leeds is that the planners sunk the motorway into the ground instead of putting it on stilts like parts of the M8

They did that in Glasgow in the 1960s and again recently with the m77 / m8 connection to the m74

Must be the closest motorway to a city centre in the UK?

"

In the Sixties, it was assumed that more urban motorways were vital for London’s prosperity. Backed by well-financed lobbying from the construction industry they were planned everywhere, from the Strand and Oxford Street to a “motorway box” around inner London. Opposing them was to be “against growth and jobs” and out of order. No one says that today. It is rightly assumed that demand for road space must be curbed, by congestion or pricing, to meet capacity.
