steveo: "not sure how catastrophic that would be..."

Pretty catastrophic if the failure is just as you set off and you're out the saddle pressing down on the pedal at the top of the stroke.

Thanks gents. Very gracious. I'll see how far I get on the old one. And how tonight's second interview goes. :)

If it's only to see you over a short period, I have a spare 8 speed wheel you can borrow.

If you think your freehub is about to go , and you
ll know it
s gone as you
ll have no drive , a handy tip is to carry a couple of long cable tie
s with you at all times to zip tie your cassette onto your spokes , at least it`ll get you home if nothing else.

It
s not a difficult job to replace if you
ve got a cassette remover and a chain whip to remove the cassette then it`s just a case of an 8mm (i think) allen key to remove the freehub and the new one just screws in normally

Most likely failure will be pawls break and won't engage so you won't be able to pedal, not sure how catastrophic that would be...

If you've got time crack the bearing races open and check if they're dry or knackered that will at least confirm that its the freewheel and not the hub bearings.

I've probably got an 8spd 26" wheel in my dads loft you could use if it does get any worse.

Could be one of the ratchet pawls not fully disengaging. Mine has been doing it for a while now, irritating but not enough to make me change it.

Might be. As reported elsewhere, the rear hub on my Raleigh Pioneer had two bearing split in half like dried peas when Eastside looked into it.

Worth taking to the LBS, I reckon.

My freehub is making a regular clicking sound when I'm freewheeling, only when there's a weight on it or its travelling at speed.

Is it the bearings going?
