Carlton Reid's article in Comment Is Free, and featured in Grauniad Bike Blog:

"A Raleigh sale won't be the end of the road for this historic British brand

The days when Raleigh was the world's dominant bicycle maker are long gone but new owners could focus on its proud heritage"

Carlton Reid's article has yet to appear, it seems. There are two articles on Raleigh online, neither by him. Maybe coming out this evening in time for tomorrow's paper?

I read that tweet and did wonder when I read the thread title if it was Carlton.

Have filed the Guardian piece on Raleigh. Only obliquely mentioned the history of the Reliant Robin, a 3-wheeler car created by Raleigh.

Depends what you mean by "leading".

In terms of technological innovation, the leading UK brand is probably Brompton.
They can also lay claim to a lead in build quality, along with Moulton and Pashley, at least as far as "mass market" goes. Custom and specialist frame builders clearly beat that, but are very "niche". Dawes/Claud Butler somewhere else, similar position to Raleigh in many ways, but not quite as "mass market".

Raleigh are probably still market leaders by volume for a UK brand. Probably outsold by Giant, Specialized. They in turn are probably outsold by Halfords brands like Apollo, Boardman, etc. So maybe Halfords is the UK's 'leading' bike brand?

Does selling more equate to "leading"?

To be fair, if you read the opening sentence they explain the headline more or less, and until a few years ago it was the company I associated with British bikes - at least until I bought Deliah my Giant hybrid.

Pretty sure they still sell more than Brompton, Pashley and Moulton combined. Still 'designed'/specced in UK.
