Spokes fine, rim fine, but a replacement chain was skipping so the cogs are worn :-/
Looks like I need to get a block remover then :-)

Thanks for the info chaps, I have only had to do hyperglide type cassettes up until now!

You could try the figure-eight chain-inversion removal technique, if that sort of thing is what it's for. Mine took some considerable straining to remove, which is fair enough considering the years and miles which had gone into tightening it.

Yes but no.

You'll have lots of ball bearings running around and the body still attached to the hub.

Have you got a broken spoke??

Thanks for the swift reply :-)

In the absence of the correct tool I assume my original idea will work? Are parts still available for these do you know?

Looks like a normal 6 speed freewheel (not a cassette) - so standard Shimano block remover.

I've got a road wheel (by which I mean 700c) which has a Shimano cassette which is not of the standard modern type, (pic above hopefully), I assume to remove it I'll get away with just using a chain whip as usual, then with my free hands(!) tap off the lockring using a suitable drift and hittystick?
