The system is designed and managed with cars in mind; as the priority. It makes sense, in a way, cars are harder to just turn in the road and head off somewhere else but wandering around in Edinburgh on Friday, I was in no doubt that some of the roads I was walking down were going to be affected by a half marathon today. You'd only <em>really</em> have known about it if you'd been out and about in the 48 hours prior in the area and seen one of very very few signs warning of it. People from elsewhere, of course, who happened to be passing through would be nonethewiser. The consequences of me cycling on the pavement are trivial. I slow to a crawl around other people. Sometimes we choose our sides of the pavement and pass each other with a smile. Sometime people stop or step off the path onto the grass and we pass with a smile. You'd have to cook up something extreme to provide some catastrophic consequences - riding like a loon down Princes Street and crashing into a fragile old dear, who bangs her head with fatal consequences.</p> <p>The consequences of a car doing anything unsafe in fairly normal circumstances are always potentially catastrophic both for the occupants and anyone around them. Even when they think what they're doing is unsafe, drivers rely on previously getting away with it - nothing happening or not getting caught - for "proof" of its safety. It is not inherently safe.</p> <p>It will take a generation to create a network of appropriate paths but a segregated infrastructure already exists that cyclists could, in most circumstances, share with pedestrians without any danger. This was blocked off years ago and - with the typical "you're on your own now - so f*ck you!" attitude that prevails when cycling provision is disrupted by contruction works - no alternative was ever provided. So, I've been ignoring both a one-way street and no-entry sign for some time.</p> <p>Other higlights on this stretch have included the complete closure of the pavement with high barrier fencing, forcing all the passengers from Edinburgh Park to walk along the road with traffic approaching them from behind. Interestingly, today going down cutlins the whole right lane was stowed with parked cars and a norbert dentrassle lorry, so no buses could fit in to it at all.</p> <p>The quick succession of infringements was also counted against me. My raising of the wider thrust of the campaign is my only major concern (as the police were kind enough to let me off with a warning). when I asked about ASLs the bad cop said " the cars are there for a reason" he didn't specify the reason but I guess they are the ones we then discussed on this thread ie they were stopping as lights changed, safer to enter the box etc. The debate on this thread has been interesting but my concern that the clampdown will result in a campaign against cyclists infringing the highway code but not focus on drivers RLJing etc is still my gut reaction as the cop I classed as bad cop ( for ease of reference, he was hardly Harvey keitel) had many of the joe public opinions about cyclists in my readingofnwhat he was saying (from his totally fair - you use the roads you follow the highway code like all drivers obviously do, to his admiration for my hi viz jacket). So if twomlessminformed cops are out together we are heading for some fines. still not sure when the fines will kick in? </p>
