@Claggy - I'm not saying that it will be 5-6 years before they get a provisional, rather that they'll be independent 5-6 years earlier than if they waited for the provisional...

Eldest should be let loose on the roads, on her own, on defined routes, shortly after the summer, I'd guess - aged 12.

I won't be hoping for a backie though... (Rule 68)

Disappointingly all those parents that I know whose offspring have learnt to drive and/or have their own car do not think to offer the aged rel a lift or go to do their shopping. Far too busy with their own social life and once they become teenagers seem to think a whole different way to that the parents might expect!! All I am saying is, don't get your hopes up! In fact some of my best friends had to bribe their offspring by paying for petrol etc before they got a lift, although they had spent years being dad or mum's taxi!

@cb - tell me about it! I'm eagerly waiting for the time when I can stop chaperoning the kids around on the road and let them get on with it.

I guess that day should arrive about 5-6 years [1] before they get a provisional license!

I heard/saw this early this morning and groaned. No mention that it teaches children no independence at all. presume BBC just replicated a press release with no thought. couldn't find anywhere to comment/complain.

Not us! Bike, public transport, or on foot. Very occasionally, taxi. We might not get there so quickly sometimes, but at least we don't have to spend ages finding somewhere to park.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17682694

"
A third of parents spend between 10 and 49 hours a month per child ferrying their children about by car, a survey suggests.

The AA Driving School poll of more than 6,000 parents found a minority (2%) spent at least 50 hours a month.

The motoring organisation said this was equivalent to many people's annual leave of 25 days a year.
"

Not all bad news though...

"
"Hopefully many of those hours spent driving the children to their activities will be repaid when they are old enough to drive themselves and keen to get behind the wheel - even if it's just popping to the supermarket to help their mum out."
