"
Great City Attractions will pay the city council £50,000 to lease out East Princes Street Gardens from early May until October.

Councillors approved the proposals, which will see up to 1000 passengers per day pay £8 for a 15-minute ride on the wheel, although some warned the attraction would become a permanent feature.

"

What ENews readers think -

Will you be going for a ride in the giant wheel in Princes Street Gardens?

Yes it’ll give some fantastic views of the city
1 (6%)

No, I can get the same views from the Scott Monument
5 (31%)

At £8 a shot? You must be joking
10 (63%)

I presume the ferris wheel will be exactly the same as the one in George Square in Glasgow and the one you can see from the train at York? How common.

;-)

Won't the wheel ruin the view of the Castle far more than the installation of 5 big rings?

It would have been far nice - and more fitting for the surroundings - if they had installed Olympic rings made from lots of colourful flowers. And it would maintain the history of doing nice floral commemoration displays on the Mound. And a lot cheaper too I would wager.

I read it that, way:

"Both the rings and the emblem of the Paralympic Games – the Agitos are to be raised to stand vertically on a platform on the Mound in the heart of the city.

The temporary structures, which cost £200,000 of public money, are due to be removed in October have not received full support."

Is that coming from LOCOG then?

Technically a £300,000 deficit, but in being a council building project no doubt it will double in cost and be ready for the Commonwealth.</strike>

The Ferris wheel planned for the Prince Street gardens seemed to get waived through planning restrictions because the cooncil weren't going to pay for it and they were going to get a cut of the gate money (at least that's the way that the chipwrapper portrayed it).

The ferris wheel will have the best views of Edinburgh because it will be the only place where you can't see the ferris wheel. (Much like the old joke about Appleton Tower)

It's frankly stupid to put a ferris wheel in what amounts to a big (drained) ditch. You probably won't even be able to see over the top of the buildings on Princes Street from it.

It's cheap and tacky. It should stay where it belongs, in some other city.

"I can't think why Edinburgh needs a Ferris Wheel. We already have seven natural viewing points called 'hills', plus a couple of structures called 'monuments'."

"But yeah, I don't know either. Really."

Cos people is lazy innit, and sitting on a wheel that gives a view per revolution is easier than having to get the 'natural' high (where you can really take in the view and not hope that the camera gets it right first time because you'll only get one chance to show people how great that view was).

People come to Edinburgh because they want to see the Castle and all the big public gardens and the space and for all the historical stuff. They don't want to see an identikit Euro-city with funfairs and blinkenlights plonked in the middle.

To excessively mis-quote an Edinburgh saying!

"THE body responsible for protecting Edinburgh’s world heritage site has demanded a giant ferris wheel earmarked for the capital’s Princes St Gardens is moved to either the Meadows or Inverleith Park to avoid damaging famous views of the castle."

http://www.scotsman.com/news/scottish-news/top-stories/heritage-guardians-demand-different-site-for-edinburgh-ferris-wheel-1-2234403

Does Edinburgh need/want one anywhere?

What happened to the one planned for Leith?

Isn't the one at Christmas/Hogmanay enough?

If you want a view why not climb the Scott Monument or visit the Castle?

Other questions are available.
