Excellent, Islabikes it must be then. Thanks all, especially Roibeard for the offer of a trial. He's not going to make it to POP (Cub camp) so I think I'll just measure him up and go with their size guide. The Beinn 26 small looks ideal.

Another vote for the Islabike... Our tall 8 year old (now nearly 10) has been riding it non-stop since he got it a year and half ago. I think it will probably do him for another year or two too. Very robust bike..

@Inst - We're also pleased with the Islabikes - Beinn 20 small, Beinn 24, Beinn 26 small in our case, so if you want to see or try one, drop me a PM...

We're very happy with the Islabike we've got and I'll certainly give them very serious consideration when we need bigger bikes for our kids. They definitely do mudguards and etc

I'm starting to look for a new bike for Ewan. He's 8 but tall and I'm findings his child's mountain bike (EBC Cairn) is getting small and anyway it's heavy and really just intended for pottering around the park.

I'm thinking about something lighter and more suited for longer runs rather than play. Something that could be fitted with mudguards and a bottle cage. If he were bigger I'd be thinking a cross bike would be ideal but grateful for any other thoughts or ideas of companies to look at.
