Bizarrely I have never seen anyone pavement cycling here. Drummond Place, where the road surface is so staggeringly bad I can't even think of anything rough enough to compare it with, yes but along Albany Street, no.

As commented on by Min in another thread.

More signage to plug the gaps - in case some cyclists slip through the city centre by using pavements.
Actually noticed increase in pavement cycling but doubt these signs will deter.

If heading to the canal further west I'd probably just head down Dalry Road and then up Ardmillan to Harrison.

This sign is ridiculous and I'm glad it's been highlighted.

The options to get to the canal path from Haymarket station are few:

1. Cycle up the Dalry colonies and inevitably get in folks' way.

2. Cycle east (but that option's soon to be ruled out again when the one way system comes in towards the station) towards the Premier Inn on 'Morrison Link' then figure out what to do when you get to the no-go, banned to cyclists, West Approach Road.

3. Take the risk and bomb it along Grove Street the wrong way. I wouldn't recommend this!

It would be nice if two hubs of the city were connected. Maybe I've missed an easy and safe route. Please do correct me if I have.

I've been honked at for riding over a Toucan crossing before. Not sure if it was because they thought I was riding on a regular pedestrian crossing or if they were annoyed I had stopped their progress momentarily. Either way, it is possible to point to the illuminated green bicycle using only your middle digit.

I was looking at and photographing various bits around the Morrison Link/Springside facility the other day. Hopefully the green bicycle on the crossing-signals is noticed by a few people, though some would still tut even after having seen a shared-use sign when there are no pavement markings.

Dave, are there shared use signs on Grove Street? That would make sense of the Brandfield one alright.

Wingpig, I guess so but the sign would be better on the other side of the lights across the WAR where there is no shared use sign and a fair bit of understandable tutting from pedestrians as a result.

Not spotted that, but presumably it's to complement the Springside cut-through which technically requires cyclists to use the narrow shared-use footway heading north if they don't want to technically go the wrong way along the one-way road parallel to Grove St.

Grove St is a pretty annoying obstacle, so you can imagine it might be handy for a lot of folk to be able to legally ride along it (many probably do anyway).

Source: I used to live on Grove St.

(The <strike>pavement</strike> shared-use path photographed above is no narrower than other facilities I can think of, to be fair. There are two places on my old commute where a pavement of that width was redesignated and extensively used. The smart choice would still be abolishing parking on one side of Grove St for a dedicated bike contraflow of course).

I try to be postive about new cycle infrastructure, but this is a puzzle to me....am I missing something?

I diverted off my commute route past McEwan Square going from Hawmarket to the canal to have a look at Evans and trundled down Brandfield Street in that direction.

I came to Grove Street, which is one-way in the wrong direction, so I dismounted, aiming to walk round on to Fountainbridge.

But there, just before the junction I saw this:

Was I really expected to cycle along the short and narrow pavement past the bin and round the blind corner onto the Grove Street pavement? There were no signs on Grove street to cause pedestrians to expect cyclists and I don't think the pavement is really suitable for shared use there.

This just seems to be a sign stuck up at random that's not much use and might actualy be a hazard. Have I got it wrong?
