Saw a chap jump two separate red lights through tollcross today. Caught up with him at Lothian road. Said to him police were fining RLJING. He started on a what lights did I jump, so isaid, it's not me it's the polis, they lifted me last week and warned me and asked to spread the word. He seemed to accept this.

Hands held out in readiness for punishment!
Drove in this morning because of a cold, and found myself stuck slap bang in the middle of the ASL at the Doctors pub. Didn't mean to, just kind of happened.

I'll see about trying a stealthy version, Dave.

The downside is it'll require me to be a bearded man hiding in the bushes taking pictures and people might get the torch and pitchforks out.

Ooh. I know. I'll pop a bit of tape on the bridge of my old and not-trendily rimless glasses, stand on the the Slateford bridge and wear my cagoule.

I also think there is an element of many people not caring about, or having any pride in their driving, or not particularly caring.

Even when there is no ASL it's rare to see a car stopped on the stop line (same for give-way lines).

People typically either:
- stick the nose of their car a metre or more over the line (rubbish/uninterested/uncaring driver).
- stop half a car length before the line (I'm convinced these poeple think they're on the line but they don't know where the front of their car is*)

*I'm sure this is a wide spread problem - you see it all the time. E.g. people slow speed manoevering when parking or leaving their car a useless half car space from the end of the double yellow (major pet hate of mine).

Possibly though what I find interesting is that a number of cyclists did think the Police were doing a good thing whereas apparently none of the drivers did.

Perhaps they only want RLJing cyclists stopped on the understanding that they can continue to encroach on ASL and cycle lanes whenever they want? Surely not!

I spent just over ten minutes outside Doctor's monitoring ASL compliance last night (around 6pm).

One car and one cyclist went through halfway through the red cycle, and a couple of cars encroached into the ASL, but on the whole I was surprised by the compliance rate. Of course, a chap with a camera trained on the line as you approach a red light may have an effect on things!

Professing ignorance or a curiosity to figure if the no entry sign except buses applied to cyclists was my defence when I was stopped but there is also ignorance that is genuine.

As I said on here after I was 'lifted' - much easier to stop a cyclist than a car so there will be a disproportionate number of cyclists.

I think the police exercise is useful, but IO think they are in danger of being biased against cyclists. I wonder if one of the two Uni of Edinburgh cyclists who were thanking the police might be the same person who posted the Lothain Bus video that took the huff when Min pointed out his somewhat anti-cycling opinion (as I saw it)

I think there is genuinely a lot of ignorance about: I was in the back of a cab chatting to the driver about cycling, with him saying he'd like to get back into it, hadn't had a bike for ages etc. So generally well disposed to two wheels:

I think their sex is potentially important because even in these small numbers it suggests there might be a systematic difference. In general, infringers seem to be more likely to be men (assuming it's not also the case that drivers are more likely to be men, equalising infringement rates). If you're producing information and publicity it's often helpful to know who you should be aiming it at.

Interesting figures, what it does demonstrate is that there are both poor cyclists and poor drivers. These are the ones who are noticed by all parties, during our day to day commute.

Consider detailed analysis of the figures of little value as traffic volumes change all the time, due to holidays, weather etc. But it does illustrate issues.

This has been a useful and worthwhile excersise and I think it should be repeated regularly until the statistics show a marked improvement.

Maybe I'm over-sensitive after Ester's outburst on R4 but I'm slightly puzzled by the collection of male/female statistics, which seem about as useful as recording the vehicle colour or (more controversially) hair colour of miscreants. Why does the gender of the person in charge of a vehicle matter?

There are other measures that could be used that might help get a fuller picture, such as 'proportion of light phases where either line was violated by cyclists / drivers where there was opportunity to do so'.

Some stuff needs careful disclaiming. For instance, because only 5% of cyclists are women, to discover that 25% of red light jumping cyclists are women would seem to ring alarm bells - but of course, it may be that every man jumped the reds and only a small proportion of the women, but there happened to be a sudden rush of women (plus, 5% is made up).

I wonder if there is any association with location. Certainly I have seen more cyclists RLJer's near the centre than the outskirts but there are also more cyclists. My a priori feeling on ASL is that there is more compliance nearer the centre but I expect I am completely wrong. Understanding this might help targetting.

Yes, okay, the road is completely blocked; the pavement is wide, and occasionally quiet (usually stowed with folk); they are (mostly) being careful. For goodness sake though, it's only a few yards. I get off and push, so can you!
