Sorry.
Mr fimm's course was postponed, which meant I couldn't just vanish off with random people from the internet, so I agreed to meet a friend once my triathlon marshalling duties were over and cycled back to Edinburgh with him. Probably just as well, as the bottom bracket on the road bike is on its way out according to mr fimm.

Musselburgh Festival Ride Out. Official song (last verse):

Dear Honest Toun! The men who won thy
honourable name of Old,
Reckoned a kindly spirit greater far than
either fame or gold;
Long as Esk beneath the Old Brig runs to
mingle with the sea,
Thou wilt ne'er lack sons and daughters
worthy of thy name and thee.

Chorus
For Musselburgh was a Burgh,
When Edinburgh was nane,
And Musselburgh will be a Burgh,
When Edinburgh's gane.

The older planes that we saw after that were soooo slow, fantastic though. The traffic was horrendous today out in E Lothian...what with the airshow, racing at Musselburgh, and for an all together different experience, about 100 horses at the top of Carberry Hill, which had come off the Pentcaitland path. One woman at the back, on an extremely frisky, and headstrong mount, looked me straight in the eye and asked me if I would like to swap. I declined, I was in charge of my steed...and she was clearly not enjoying her ride very much. I have no idea what they were participating in but the police had shut of the road and were in control of the lights, and a lot of the riders seem to be displaying rosettes.

The Red Arrows were absolutely brilliant, as ever. A small group of us had stopped at Merryhatton for some sustenance and to get out of the rain, and it tipped down...We left the garden centre just as the display started, so we stopped for a gander, and were buzzed by one plane that flew extremely low right over us, it had passed over us a few minutes before going the other way, and came back to give us all a right good fright, so low it was that one of our number ducked...and the rest of us were left with palpitations. Well, I mean you could feel the afterburner for heaven's sake. Talk about hedgehopping!! Outstanding!

One(ish) day reminder.

The air display starts around 1pm and finishes at 5pm. There will be a break from around 2.30-3.30pm.

If anyone wants to ride out, I could make a 330-5PM shift, I will be back from cycling club duties around 12, will have lunch etc. then probably an hour and a halfout to East Fortune.

Bump.
Mr fimm is away that day, which means I could get to go and play - once I've finished marshalling at Gullane Tri... but if I cycle to Gullane, then I can cycle off in whatever direction I want.

and take ear plugs for the smaller ones, some of the fun stuff can be a tad loud !Take your own picnic, the prices are a bit steep in the "food outlets " wander about and visit the lesser exhibits, the vulcan is nice but the old trucks and other stuff in the smaller sheds dotted about are interesting too, and the people who man them are generally overlooked, so they are very enthusiastic !I might be there with my air cadets but as its now a different area we prob cant go !
chocks away! tally ho !

If people do go, I strongly recommend taking/borrowing a wideband radio so you can listen in to the control tower chatter. Adds to the experience and helps make sure you are looking the right way when the fun stuff arrives ;-)

You can get a good view from Berwick Law and free ....

Good tip!

I took No.1 son a couple of years ago and he loved it. Train to Drem then cycled the country lanes with him on the back.

If I'm around (likely) I'll be up for a ride to North Berwick: picnic on the slopes of the Law. I'll pass on the entry fee: once you've seen the Avro Vulcan and the museum once...

Might do it properly again with the kids in a year or two.

Scotland's National Airshow apparently...

The one at Leuchars is not much longer for this world given the closure of the RAF base. So East Fortune might be Scotland's only airshow in a few years...

Anyone fancy riding out to this? I did a few years back and it's a nice ride, fun passing the queueing cars, and you can take your bike in. Nice to sit on the grass having a picnic and watching the planes.

It's £16 a ticket, which is pretty steep, but that's what they charge so if you're willing to pay.

I should probably definitely be going (got a wee Olympic trip to London with some friends, but I think it's the weekend after), and happy to share some of my homemade pork pies and cake.
