@Min as long as the leaflets were not actually binned then the message will still get out there! Remember there are a lot of shift workers at RIE so there is a high turnover and though there are a number of abandoned bikes it seems most are used.

When, in a previous life, I worked in a library, I discovered that THE British library archives just about everything. Indeed, signed/autographed copies for posterity!! The proof will be in the pudding...and I expect it is going to be vast and good!!

"that they are entitled to in order that they can preserve them for the nation"

Indeed.

I think you'll find there is a legal obligation to supply a few other UK libraries too!

That is pretty cool. :-)

"Much of it due to all you great people who've been leafleting, telling people etc."

I have a horrible feeling that someone took away all my RIE flyers. Either that or every single bike is being used (unlikely). Postcards and posters are all still up though and I have a few more for some last minute stuff.

The National Library of Scotland got in touch this morning to ask for their free copies of our manifesto, flers and posters that they are entitled to in order that they can preserve them for the nation.

Despite everything else like the press, radio, TV coverage, the warm words of Politicians (some warmer than others), the parliamentary debate and all the hard work of countless individuals, this is what really made it sink in for me as having really registered.

You may all go along in 10 or 20 or 50 years and put on your rose-tinted riding spectacles and leaf over some yellowing POP literature :)

I agree. I have cycled all my life and for the first time in that life it really looks as though things are beginning to change. Something like POP would have been unthinkable a few years ago.

Yes, a very good article. I really think that there has been a sea change in attitudes and that cyclists now also feel empowered...I have to say that I think the use of the internet has helped enormously and delivers messages so fast and spreads the news. I think that tomorrow's turnout may exceed all expectations, I hope so.

Must be the best biased article on cyclIng in a mainstream newspaper I have ever read.

Well it must be biased because I couldn't find anything wrong with it and it covered a wide range of issues with remarkable clarity!

I must admit I hadn't realised that a cycle death in Glasgow had been one of the reasons for DB to set this thing rolling.

Perhaps the most important thing about this article is that it points out that a large proportion of people who ride bikes also drive - and also that a lot of people would like to cycle but don't feel ready/safe.

I'm not going to pretend that CCE is in any way 'representative' but the spread of types of cyclists (and fact that they are not 'just' roadies or commuters or MTBers) is quite impressive and also the number of 'I'm new to this so...'.

For years there have been surveys which show that 'people say that they would like to cycle, but'.

In the past it's been easy to think 'they are only saying that because they think they should' or 'most people are just too lazy' or even 'that's fine, but there will never be the sort of joined-up-infrastructure to encourage some people to cycle'.

I really think things have finally changed ( - again, perhaps, etc. - ). Politicians really are realising that current cyclists get a rough deal and that there really are people who would like to cycle - and maybe even leave their cars at home, reducing congestion and air pollution and improving their health (all with long term social and personal benefits).

Excellent article, and great comments from the #pop team.

Usual EEN troll comments about road tax etc entirely miss sara's point about cyclists being drivers too!

As a mass peloton of protesters prepares to take pedal power to Holyrood, Claire Black meets the campaigners sensing a gear change in their battle to increase safety and access for cyclists in Scotland
