I wouldn't steal one but there is a often a tempting one locked up beside Queen St station. It's metallic blue with a DynoHub like the one my mum had and gave away.

Do you think that bike has been left and the thieves have come along and stripped it? This is my feeling. But the mudguards are throwing me to consider option B. THe person chains it up but removes wheels and saddle. Does seem daft considering the chain used to attach the frame could have gone round the front wheel.

How long does a bike get left in NY before it is stripped? How long does a bike get left in Edinburgh before it gets stripped? I see numerous bikes but most appear to have been trodden on by drunks rather than stripped?

In Mike Leigh's film Happy Go Lucky, the main character cycles a bike (I believe it is a Raleigh Shopper) down to Camden Market and when she returns it has been stolen. Who would steal a Raleigh Shopper?

In Flashdance Jennifer Beals cycles home from her day job as a welder (totally plausible) over the Brooklyn Bridge (?) on a drop handled racer, looks good.

Got this yesterday.

Message on the back -

"They don't all look like this (but a lot do).

They do have some good bike lanes with bollards though, so cars can't get in."

Interestingly I got notification of a Walking, Cycling, Connecting Communities event yesterday -http://walkcycleconnect.org/conference/programme

It includes -

Keynote speech: If New York Can Do It …(By Video Conference)

Janette Sadik-Khan, Transportation Commissioner, New York City

Implementation of the City’s strategic plan – Sustainable Streets: Plaza programme; Broadway Boulevard; On-street bike lanes; Car-free summer streets; Week-end pedestrian walks.

Nice that Edinburgh/Scotland will be getting advice from NYC which really seems to have grabbed the 'sustainable transport' agenda recently.

Commuting with the Commissioner on NYC’s Bike to Work Day - http://www.streetfilms.org/nyc-bike-to-work-day-09
