Getting onto the railway path is not great, but the more problematic point is getting back to HP - right turn onto Dalry road is very tricky (better to get off and cross at pedestrian crossing), then dodgy intersection to get onto Harrison Road. All entirely do-able - have seen at least 2 five year olds cope with it just fine at different times - but not nice.

Should be better by 2014, according to ATAP.

Strictly speaking, you can get onto the railway path without crossing Corstorphine Road, but it would involve pushing bikes along the pavement, under the bridge that the path goes over, and then up a rather steep slope onto the path itself. I don't bother, but just make the right turn out of Russell Road (or whatever the road is called) and then 1st left and up the hill a bit to a point where the access to the path is flatter. However I'm usually in MAWIL mode if I'm going that way and so have no problem with making that manoeuver. I do come back the way I've described (very cautiously down the slope!) as it is then all left turns.

Ker-bump
Another dad in the playground was speaking to me about this.
I think the idea of Ocean Terminal has to be ruled out as the Russell Road <strike>Tram</strike> Bridge building means we would all have to cross the Corstorphine road to get onto the railway path.
As the other dad also said it might be a big slog to cycle home as it is all uphill (albeit a gentle slope) and there will be a number of kiddies on their own bikes (I think I will stick to the tow-bike again for this very reason)

So I think the canal to Ratho is the best plan for a starter ride, coffee and a climb, picnic optional. There are a few picnic tables at the clibming centre or better there are a load of them at and in the vicinity of the Ratho bridge inn for those that don't want to go to EICA. Again the EICA will be time dependent. We could stop at the big park (Murrayburn?) and use their outdoor gym equipment as they were on the list of possible improvements to Harrison.

Play it by ear, take it as it comes, wait for a sunny day and shout out via here and facebook (PoP group?) that we plan on heading with a few hours notice...

obviously Ratho would still involve the aqueduct. path will be a bit wet after Heriot Watt now. A good spin out. The Climbing Centre is good. There is a small chance you will see a Kingfisher in flight which is as near to god as I will ever get and is like James Joyce's definition of love as a shout in the street.

The pedestrian "refuge" mentioned up-thread on Craiglockhart Avenue did happen (I didn't imagine it).

There is now a new extra fat island on the uphill (SE) side of the junction. It infringes onto the downhill side of the road (there are still two uphill lanes).

I liked that quote too - kind of why I used the "back together" line

I reckon the Roseburn path to Ocean Terminal would be better than using the WoL and the narrow path with steps, aquaduct? vertigo? a jedi craves not these things...
or the Canal all the way out to Ratho. EICA isn't much further along - wee yins could get a go on climbing walls and soft play etc while the grown ups grab a coffee and a blether?

Gembo's route is doable - but slow.

I've taken lots of groups of all ages across the aqueduct - up to 100 people.

Only 'problem' I've had was with an adult who used to be a climber but can no longer handle heights well!

He just pushed and looked at the ground.

If you look at the map chdot posted you can avoid the aqueduct by coming off at Allan park as suggested and heading down to Slateford road. There is a pedestrian crossing if the roads are busy that can be used to get to the north side of the street - bikes can be pushed to water of leith visitor centre, does nice cup of tea. Then on to inglis green road past the derelict b and q then another pedestrian crossing to red hall drive from where you can enter side road and cycle up to red hall park and from there the small tunnel under the railway takes you back to canal at point where you join the WoL path. I use this route in reverse coming on canal from wester hailes but without the pushing on occasion to avoid the aqueduct? Balerno farmers' market morning of sat 12th may

I've voted 27th May as expect to be back on my bike for gentle cycles long before then and, in reality, this is the first weekend day I can accommodate in the next month.

I've only got my racing bike after selling my mountainbike at the weekend so would be voting for a relatively sedate surface but that's most certainly not a priority since my presence is no requirement!

Am I right in thinking that the next junction up the hill (Craiglockhard Road North) now has an extra wide island in the middle of the road making it a bit safer/easier for cyclists to get across.

Or am I thinking of somewhere else...?

The 'simplest' alternative to the aqueduct would be coming off at Meggetland and then along Slateford and Lanark Roads - not pleasant.

If you come off canal at Allan Park following the green route would be OK -

I've also ridden out to Balerno. Yes from the Tickled Trout there are narrow points and steps and steep hills, but was meaning to come off there Lanark Road levels out next to the canal as the path is flat with no steps.
