when my mother was visiting and taking small person to nursery, said small person got very upset and said the taxi was taking them the wrong way - cause he didn't follow our (bike) route. poor grandmother!

I think that is just a really bad headline for the story. Not being able to draw an accurate map of how all the streets in your neighbourhood connect is not at all the same as "not knowing where you are going". I am sure the kids in the study all knew where they were going when they were being driven. But they probably always go along the same roads and never get the chance to explore.

Not very surprising conclusions but still sad. And a wee bit of nominative determinism with Appleyard.

I would argue that it isn't always the case that kids who are driven everywhere don't know where they are going.

My twin sister has severe cerebral palsy and as such is confined to a wheelchair. She used to get a taxi to and from her special school. When we moved house the first few runs they did the taxi forgot that we had moved so missed the turning. My sister shouted at them the entire way up the hill till they realised what was wrong. She would have been about 10 at the time when this happened.
