@anth, yes ! basically, i agree !
removal of standing water, unecessary as the national, or 70 or whatever signs on a motorway usually preclude the removal of many peoples brain !Take a look , after a spell of "reasonably" dry weather in this country, a day of rain and youve got repmobiles reversing off corners at high speed, and a very boyant recovery vehicle industry !
slip sliding away .......

Vaguely talking of which, the new M74 bit in Glasgow is rubbish at clearing standing water. We were driving back up from Cheshire in last night's delightful rain and it was like a pond. Glad it's only a 60.

Passed two cars which had spun off further south, including a fast-looking thing which had departed with enough speed to disappear up the raised banking of a slip road. Glad both were well under control - wasn't the weather/visibility to be playing at Good Samaritan.

I've heard this before splitshift, but as far as I'm aware (having checked with a few places and people) the 'National Speed Limit' is the maximum permissible for a particular vehicle on a particular type of road, which is detailed in rule 124 of the Highway Code - and for cars on Dual Carriageways and Motorways that is 70mph.

That's the reason the slips roads for joining dualled roads have 70mph signs - if they had national speed limit signs then the limit would be 60 until you get onto the dualled section, but the 70 signs allow people to get up to 'joining speed'.

National speed limit in this country is, for a private car, 60 mph.Heavies have other limits, as do passenger carrying buses/coaches.then of course throw in the trailer towing limits,!All roads have a predetermined limit, national limit applies only when signed.
speed limits are always stipulated, can go up, or down, see the section of M8 through glasgow with a full time 40 mph stretch at whitecart viaduct,also, edinburgh bypass, while an A class road, does have stretches of 70 mph signage so even with a new 80 mph limit, it would still have to involve signage change, otherwise the 80 mph would then apply, if it became national limit , to many A class roads !I suspect that the national limit is still in place where traffic planners have spotted a risk and therefor try to slow traffic. Note the use of the word try !
vroom vroom !
scott
wish there was a signed limit as to how much money you can spend on bike bits in a week ! Ive deffo over sped !but your honour, they are new bits, and shiny and i NEEEEEEED them !!!! :))

I was on the new section of M80 early on Sunday morning and noticed that they had a National Speed Limit sign rather than a 70 sign. I thought motorways had to have an explicit 70 so I wondered if they were using the national speed limit sign so they don't need to replace them should the limit go up to 80.

"A Scottish Government spokesman said it has no plans to raise the limit."
