"Must find out if the work on the rest of G. IV B. is edging its way to the Missoni."

Apparently not, but -

"Further minor works planned as part of QBiC to realign kerb at the bus boarder and to provide colour surfacing past the loading bay."

(February-May next year)

Time this thread was revived I thought as I rode past that big car (in the gutter) this morning.

Must find out if the work on the rest of G. IV B. is edging its way to the Missoni.

It's still the case that this should never have been designed like that. Would improve a bit of buildout was reduced.

At the least, that section of lane should be RED. Also should probably be wider and straight - all the way to the ASL so that there really is only one vehicle lane to the lights.

Probably should be double yellows and 'no loading' flashes here too. (There were 2 vans.)

Don't know how long it has been like this since I don't ride past very often but the left and right cars lanes have been removed, meaning there is just one car lane. Drivers still encroached into the bike lane but not to the same extent. I used the cycle lane both times I rode past today whereas before I only used it to see how bad it was (bad).
Once you get up to the junction, there is still a right turn arrow on the right hand side but it is wide enough there so not a problem.

Lights were red and cars were backed up about three or four deep, but the drivers were being considerate/driving correctly and there was a beautiful clear run up the cycle path, right up to the ASL.

It has been known...! But the parking bay adds extra opportunities for mayhem. 5 star hotel visitors don't think bike when throwing open car doors either.

I actually overtook a line of 20 cars whilst walking with two bikes along the George IV bus lane as pavements were so busy around 5pm last Friday. I kept expecting a bus or taxi but had lane to myself ...
(I can slowly cycle on one bike holding onto another but doubt it's legal or safe...)

I was cycling up George IV Bridge towards the Royal Mile yesterday afternoon. Lights were red and cars were backed up about three or four deep, but the drivers were being considerate/driving correctly and there was a beautiful clear run up the cycle path, right up to the ASL.

Nothing could go wrong...

...Until I saw a taxi heading southbound pull slightly towards the kerb and, yes, decide to attempt a u-turn into the Missoni "taxi rank" using the bit of road that I was heading into.

Should have got his taxi number for a bit of naming and shaming, but instead I wheeled out my most ironic of waves.

I still got into the ASL before the lights changed though. :)

Just read in the latest Spokes bulletin that there was a ride they ran attended by a load of councillors and they took them by here, with one of their number getting an 'understanding' of the problems with the facility when he clipped the wing mirror of a car encroaching into the bike lane.

Need more of this, councillors being taken to bad facilities, not just to see them, but to actually ride them. Good work Spokes I have to say.

HOTEL Missoni on George IV Bridge has been named best new hotel in Europe in the World Travel Awards.

It was up against rivals in Italy, Turkey, France, Germany and the Czech Republic in the poll involving thousands of international trave agents and other industry professionals.

Just to bring this one to life again, I rode past today and see that still nothing has happened. Got one video that showed a cyclist being cut up by a car swerving into the lane when the lights went red (but that was out of focus) and this one. See if you can spot the legal mandate being given to drivers here...

If traffic stays single file all the way up to the end and then separates into right turn and straight on then yes you can BUT there is very rarely anyone turning right there. It is ridiculous junction though as many of the photos and videos show clearly.

This is what it was like when I went through too - nothing in right turn lane. Obviously our observations are pretty unscientific, but given that this is (i think?) the most used cycle route in the city, something clearly still needs to be done.

I was wondering about giving it an award?

You'll note that there is nothing turning right in lots of the shots here yet the bus is dutifully sitting to the left. Then again it has just driven over the invisible bike lane.

So... should they..

1. paint it red?

2. remove the arrows on road lanes and just have one unmarked lane so cars and buses can work it out for themselves?

3. scrub all road markings to democratise the road?

Now cycled a few times.

Basically you're unlikely to get any further than parking bay.

Maybe they should put bike lane on right hand side as that is best place to get by traffic ;-)

Given the choice between encroaching a traffic lane and a cycle lane most drivers favour the latter!

I'm sorry it isn't working as we had hoped.

Seems the problem is that left hand turn and straight ahead lane have been combined with a slight turn in. So drivers actually are 'encouraged' to move left to go straight on!

Meanwhile the right hand turn lane is empty much of the time.

I was hoping that they would avoid a bend in cycle path. This would mean cycle lane becomes broader at end and simply incorporates the original 'irrelevant' short cycle lane. The road area used to 'promote' green transport would be no more than has been allocated to the hotel parking bay.

Currently we are protecting an empty bit of road that's not used that often in preference to ensuring that cycling is safe with proper space for lane. I would have just have gone for one car lane as they have at Greyfriars. This would also keep left hand turning tour buses from cutting in.

Basically the High St isn't a through route. The whole street is wandered over by pedestrians so why car access should be encouraged is beyond me.

Cars back up anyway from Mound and this will get worse anyway with increasing traffic.

Dave, that entire set of photos should be sent to the Council to show how much of a nonsense this is. Brilliant work!

Filling in the bike lane with red might make a difference - though there would have to be a committment to renew when worn!

That kerb, and the sharpness of the lane 'flow' around it, is the main problem. Additionally the 'streetscape decision' to put sets down the centre of the road has probably been beneficial. It clearly helps to send a message that this isn't a wide/fast road.

It should have meant that the new layout with wider pavement and retaining two lanes at the lights shouldn't have been possible.

Another option would be to widen the pavement all the way to the junction (good for pedestrians) which should guarantee that there was only one lane of traffic (plus bike lane).

Of course as I said earlier, the council has to consider more than just the safety/convenience of people on bikes - but it also wants to get considerably more people cycling so things like this are important.

That one, plus maybe the one below, sum up what I watched for 20 minutes pretty accurately I'm afraid:

If you want to wince, you can follow a series of pictures I took of a girl being simultaneously undertaken by cars in the bike lane, and overtaken on the outside (pretty good going considering there is only one lane!)

Starts here (rider in the bike lane) and goes one, two, three, four, five.

Nice photo!

(and instructive)

I think options are

Remove kerb

Make this section single lane (room for a wider cycle lane!)

Move centre line

Give up LibDem manifesto 'pledge' of cycle friendly city!
