"But let’s get back to road space. Instead of hating on cyclists, motorists should be showering us with love. Why? For every car not driven, that’s a huge piece of real estate taken out of the road space equation."

There was something on Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 the other day too.

Didn't listen to it much as there were all the usual comments about murderous, abusive, mad-cat cyclists who run red lights and ride on the paths and make everyone's life such a misery.

I didn't know there were so many cyclists that we are able to make so many peoples' lives a misery. (Justified sarcasm?)

There was the odd cyclist that called, but the anti-bike brigade generally get by, by shouting their continuous drivel to the point that Jeremy Vine has to tell them to shut up.

Before that they had been talking about speed bumps, so all the drivers were already suitably worked up.

I only hear it when it crashes into Radio Scotland at midnight...

At that time it's a phone-in with a high degree of envy, fear and loathing...

anth at work I deliberately avoided this.

You missed some good stuff today...;-)!

• 'some dispute that Gaelic is really a language' - I don't think there is any doubt that it is?
• 'I feel I don't have any connection to Gaelic'

This coming from a broadcaster based in Glasgow (Glaschu - Gaelic name meaning 'dear, green place'). Not all place names in Scotland are Gaelic but once you get outside TKmaxx land you may find a few!

Know this is off-topic but is another example of a minority interest being 'blethered about'.
Is a bit Radio Five Live - a station I detest.

I deliberately avoided this.

Stupid question to begin with - can our roads 'cope' with a 10% cycling increase? Erm, they seem to think this is 'in addition' to the current traffic rather than taking some of the cars off the road.

Ah well. Couldn't expect anything better really.

Alan Douglas
Now Director of The Broadcasting Business.

Douglas still writes extensively about driving and cars as motoring correspondent of Scottish Field magazine and contributor to Saga Radio, ITV's official motoring website http://www.carkeys.co.uk and the BBC.
He is a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and holds a car, bus, lorry and motorbike licence and is a former Regional Journalist of the Year of the Guild of Motoring Writers.

He knows nothing about cycling though...

Could the BBC not get someone more suitable? More bikes = less cars.

"Can our roads cope without a rise to 10% of all journeys by bikes?"

The 'motoring correspondent' seemed remarkably stupid - there'd be MORE room with 10% fewer cars

He also seems to think bikes shouldn't 'pass on the left' or ride in middle of traffic lanes.

At least Kaye Adams said that was safer.

Alan Douglas (a motoring journalist) repeats well known myths that will muse all those sat in traffic on way to work....

Here are just some!
• our roads are for cars
• miles and miles of unused cycle lanes
• Glasgow is 18th bike friendliest city
• cars and bikes don't mix
• cyclists jump red lights(!)
• motorists take account of cycling
• road tax....

Get hot and sweaty etc.

Is very poor so far. I might phone in and lower the standard further...
