ball joints, possibly car tce, have a look in the scrappies, OR, know any one whos into fly tying ! Small, vice like things, all with nice stainless steel ball joints/universal joints, complete with large, (ham fisted !) wing nuts or similar for securing.R/C helicopter or indeed, cheaper supermarket race cars?
Maplins ?
interesting project !
actually, some of our drivers at work use constantly recording usb cameras, they are suction fitted to screen or ceiling of truck, ive seen footage, there is next to no shake , rattle or whatever. They have a snake like gorrila mount .Although the cab is suspended, its obviously got some other suspension in the camera system.

@kaputnik, I did that once. I built a spring-loaded parallelogram with about +/- 25mm of compliance to carry my ATC2K on the front of my bike, but without the elbow joint since I aimed by pointing my bike. As Steadicam designers will know, the damping has to be surprisingly high and spring rate surprisingly low to accommodate the mass of the camera and provide the slow but controlled response. LEGO's suspension parts were entirely too stiffly sprung for it to work well, even by adding extra weights to the camera.

I've seen a two-handed unit made out of plumbing parts to carry a Handycam with its external monitor active. You held and aimed it a bit like KITT's steering wheel. But Steadicam does make 'prosumer' models that are non-articulated; I seem to recall that they featured a long reverse hanging arm with a weight on the end.

@anth, does the balljoint support something above it, or have something hanging from it? A universal joint might work as an alternative. I'd try looking in the RS catalogue rather than Screwfix, and you'll find rod end joints and rosejoints and all that stuff. Or buy a really cheap balljoint tripod and cannibalise it?

I mused on the Urban Ride that I'd like to try and make my own steadycam for the bike cam. Turns out they're not as bulky and unwieldy as thought, and due to the light nature of the camera the counterweight isn't too restrictive. Loads of guides to homebrew versions, and pics of a genuine 'you can buy this' iPhone steadycam, which makes it very clear how simply it all works.

But I need a small ball and socket joint, and I can't find one for the life of me (searching Screwfix isn't even throwing anything up...).

Any ideas?
