"a Glasgow art group has launched 50 free white-painted bikes and immediately lost 30 of them"

"The bikes have a shop value of £250 but were bought by NVA from the manufacturer for £90 each."

Rumour has it they are coming to Edinburgh for the Festival.

Might be the only 'public bikes' in Edinburgh - see tomorrow's ENews.

Is it art. Is it cycling?

Does it unify people or will cycling still be seen as an elitist 'lifetyle' choice.

What does the forum think?

"
On 15th April hundreds of cyclists joined NVA and Central Station for a mass ride out in Glasgow, to launch the Witte Fietsenplan (white bike plan) and the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Arts.

We asked people who came along to film their experience of the day, and here is the result. A crowd sourced film, that follows the cyclists' journey through the city.

Please enjoy the White Bikes film: watch it, pass it on, let us know what you think. This is a film for everyone to watch and share.

The 50 White Bikes released into the city are now being called back to NVA so they can be passed on to others. NVA have a register of local organisations and groups who would benefit from the donation of bikes, giving them life beyond the festival. NVA would like your nominations of anyone you feel would appreciate such a donation. Send contact details to godsal@nva.org.uk

Thank you very much for your support of the White Bikes, especially to those who came along on the launch day and passed on the message.

We hope you enjoy the film.

Central Station and NVA

Spotting the White Bkes: Remember - this is what an NVA Witte Fietsenplan (white bike plan) white bike looks like. (please don’t attempt to help yourself to any random white bicycle if it doesn’t look like this)

"hen I was at school it was trendy to turn the handlebars up-side-down like that."

perhaps, but I think they have moved due to not being tight...

Also not sure brakes are left/rear.

does seem a little early to conclude on the distribution of white bikes. If they have infinite numbers of white bikes then should be fine. I do not think Karma works in Barlanark, Balernoch, Barmulloch (I have only started with the Bs and the ones that sound the same, I could go on).

"The organisers of the White Bike Plan say that they have no fear of the city’s wilder elements making off with the bikes and believe “karma” will track down any thieves. Failing that, the artists will hunt down the criminals themselves and nick the bikes back."

This White Bike scheme has just started in Glasgow, a quaint fishing village on the Clyde some miles to the west of Edinburgh.

White bike plan

We had assumed that they would all be in the canal basin behind Firhill by now or someone would have liberated the Nexus hubs however that is not the case, yet.

On my way to the GFT last night I saw four white bikes on Buchanan St, which is pedestrianised, and two heading west from the pedestrian section of Sauchiehall St which is of course one way... east bound.

I was listening to John Shuttleworth's "The Man Who Lives On the M62" at the time.
