From a friend of mine on facebook:

"Dear Sky,
Thank you for your invitation to "a fantastic traffic-free bike ride through Manchester". Please do not invite me again as it was not traffic-free, and the most fantastic part by far was when I left the route to rejoin cars to ride home."

So, I've now been to the Ride Leader training, along with Sgt Quentin and CyclePC.

Good content, indeed the tips would have been useful for Anth's ride - we could have been much comfortable, taking turns "leading" as per the course and letting the rest just enjoy the ride. I'm relatively chuffed that my derived-from-first-principles family protocols are pretty close to "good practice", although there were still tips to improve things.

Bit unfortunate that I'm now meant to be an ambassador for both Sky and for British Cycling, however I don't feel I've sold my soul too much...

Oh, and the training is most useful for recreational or sport cycling (as might be expected from British Cycling?). The pack cycling techniques start working when you've got 8-10 cyclists; drivers wonder what you're up to if you do it with less (according to the trainer), so it doesn't entirely help with utility or every-day cycling. The packs are meant to make less confident folk feel comfortable and safe on a ride, and they definitely will.

However, if, to make folk feel safe on the road, we have to roam in gangs of up to a dozen, on specially risk assessed routes, it's never going to be the answer. This is (part of) the Sky and British Cycling plan to get more people cycling, yet I suspect that it can only ever increase recreational or sports cycling. The step change that PoP and the Cycling Embassy are requesting has to be the only material way forward.

I've stuck my head above the parapet for this one, although I've modified the agreement to take into account my likely availability (they require a 4 ride commitment, I've said 4 Saturday rides, where organised).

Whether they'll train me on that basis is anyone's guess!

"

I would like to make you aware of the great news that Edinburgh will host a flagship Sky Ride event in 2012!

Scottish Cycling /British Cycling Partnership

Sky Ride Local Led Ride programme: Each Sky ride event comes with a 12 month SC/BC partnership including the Skyride Local led ride programme, which is designed to encourage new and hesitant cyclists to ride more frequently. Edinburgh will have at least 25 led rides starting this summer.

Ride Leader training: We will be offering training for 30 people to obtain a FREE British Cycling Level 1 Ride Leader qualification. Ride Leaders will be required to lead or assist on a number of Skyride Local rides over the summer. In addition to a recognised qualification, each ride leader will receive free kit and payment for leading a ride.

I thought that the opportunity to train as ride leaders would be of interest to you or people in your organisation? Please forward the attached application forms to anyone who is interested in becoming a Skyride Ride Leader. Completed forms must be returned to recreation@britishcycling.org.uk (places will be allocated on a first come first served basis).

Ride Leader training in Edinburgh will take place as follows:

· Saturday 14 July Level 1 – 20 person course
· Sunday 15 July Level 2 route planning – 10 person course
· Sunday 29 July Level 1 – 10 person course

If you would like to chat through any of the above please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards

@Anth et al,
They wanted to have it on Pleasance, Commi Pool road and Cowgate as well but anticipated 4,000 plus riders of all abilities make it unworkable, as Sat afternoon Vehicle Mounted Shoppers* would be up in arms and revolting!
(Bet you thought VMS meant Variable Message Sign! Well u was wrong there!)

Yeah, I think on balance I'll ride the SKYRide, given the 'reclaim the streets' nature of it (though I won't wear their tabard - even if you think hi-viz is good against poor driving, the streets are CLOSED to motorised traffic!), and then maybe have an additional CCE element afterwards.

I do remember from reading about London SKYRides that they don't actually manage to completely close the roads, and there are manned crossings that are stopping and starting the riders (not the cars) to cross over.

Personally I think this might be a good one to 'POP' along to with some esoteric steeds, as it starts at the SP on the street right in front of it I believe. We can reclaim the roads for our collective purpose? It will be a fine loop to cause havoc, as it uses the Innocenti Via Ferrata, the Rifkind Loop, Madge's Drive, for the pedalllling, and the Archery Playground for a petit village! Must get my white lambswool scarf re-wired to the horizontal and polish my Mk3 flying goggles for the downhill slalom sections!

I'm sure they won't miss the CCE posse. I'm up for the alternative ride though Laidback! Maybe everyone ought to bring their most 'unusual' bicycle (for those that have more than one, otherwise just the 'usual' one).

Completely torn on this. SKY really are doing a lot for cycling with these rides and sponsorship of the cycling team.

But at the same time. It's SKY.

You could interlope or interweave on SkyRide and upset the applecart (sorry trailer!). Go in 'stealth mode' with no national markings on your wings and IRR paintwork! Maybe hitch up multiple trailers like a 'road train', and pin a blood soaked kangaroo on your front light bracket for effect?
