"Hrm. Demerit one point from Mr. Previous Occupant, since the hooks don't really thread into the clamps that well."

Looks to my trained eye that he's used wood screw type hooks into ducting clamps. While that may "work" it'll never fit properly.

Re: supporting wall problem. I don't know if it's visible in the photos, but while the frame is attached to the plaster for extra lateral stability, as far as load-bearing goes it's an independent structure. The vertical load is taken by the four legs.

Even the lateral bolts are more about perfectionism - the thing can't go anywahere since it's snug against the walls, but the brackets stop any wee shoogling.

Aargh, I did, this is true. Further investigation of the storage area reveals that the funny wall shape problem might not be as bad as I first thought... though a solution would still be needed. I am tempted but I am still thinking about it.

4 lightweight bikes + 2 heavy ones...? ;-)
To be honest, the effort required to move the overladen bookshelves that currently occupy part of the only space I could really put this, plus the complcation that one end is onto a wall that isn't at right angles to the other one, and is an interior wall which probably means it won't support anything, means I'd be buying more stuff to sit in a corner and not be used. But thank you for the offer.

I'd have gone for S-shaped hooks (yep, like meat hooks...)

I do have rails available free to a good home - I think the specs are 25mm, steel, white plastic coating. Length is probably 1.2m. And supports, mid and end.

http://www.screwfix.com/c/ironmongery-security/wardrobe-accessories/cat840252

It was cheaper to get a pack of 4, than buy one...

They've taken quite a weight of dive kit, hanging over the bath, so should be strong enough for a couple of lightweight bikes, with appropriate screws/fixings.

PM me if you fancy a set (rail, mid & two end supports).

Hmm. Packing the inside of the thread on the clamp with something before screwing the hook in would securify it a bit. Tapping a hole in the side of the sleeve and adding a retention screw/bolt would securify it a bit more.

I had a poke at them and the receiving nut thing seems to be integral to the clamp on the underside. It resisted as much force as I was willing to give, anyway.

Can you get bolt-ended rubberised hooks rather than self-tapping-screw-ended? Bolt-ended-rubberised-book plus P-clip plus bolt would work. If not, a long enough sleeve bolt ought to get enough bite on a screw to hang a bike from it without an episode of the heebies.

I already had your clever storage facility squirrelled away in the diy repository part of my brain, its a very clever idea.

Fimm, it should be fairly straight forward... A wardrobe rail will take a fair amount of weight, my kilt weighs more than my bikes, if you were worried you could get some mild steel in the same dimensions from the web. The brackets at either end are (i think) the standard brackets one uses to fit said rail and it looks super reinforced in the middle with the strut. Its those hooks that might be hard to source. Coated hooks can be bought cheaply the clever bit is connecting it to the rail which is where i'm scratching my head...
