Hi Folks! ..Thanks for the Warm Welcome!

Re Sheffield stands...Making further enquiries regarding the "Holes".... DaveC Was "spot on" with his answer, the holes are indeed drilled to enable batch galvanising with minimal manual labour input + quick turnaround.......

Thanks to all who took the time to investigate/reply on this topic ...Regards Bosh :-)

Welcome Bosh, sorry I ough to have formally welcomed you and introduced myself.

Cheers for the vote of confidence Morningsider, I knew all those hours squandered watching 'How do they do that' would come in handy at some point in the future...

Hi Bosh - DaveC seems to be the expert here. I had a look at some stands on the way home and they did have these holes in them, so obviously not that uncommon.

I think they weld up the stand and then Galvanise it afterwards, so making a hole in the bend would make sense as the liquid can run in and then run out after they are dipped. If they hook the stand on the lower side so the stand hangs upside down then the liquid would require the stand to be tipped up manually to get rid of the liquid in the tube. That extra manual handling at the time of Galvanising might add to the expense, and perhaps its to let excess liquid drain off with minimal manual handling during the (henry Ford) production line process.

I would just ignore it myself. If you're worried then you could just seal the hole to the rain with something yourself.

Welcome. From memory, Sheffield and Edinburgh stands do often have holes in them somewhere. I'll have a look at any non-stainless examples I pass on my lunchwalk...

Hello To Everyone..

I've followed this forum for the last 18 months or so after I found you whilst researching Off road Cycle routes/paths in the Edinburgh,Lothians + Fife areas

Good to see a cycling forum with so many knowledgeable + frequent contributors...I Hope you don't mind me "joining in" Even though I'm 250 miles away in S Yorkshire!...

Hate to make my first post A problem but....

I've just bought a Sheffield Stand (Galvanised) for quite a reasonable price I thought approx £34 Delivered ... however it was delivered to a neighbour earlier whilst I was out so I had no chance to examine it prior to signing for it.....

Anyway I now find that it has an 8mm hole drilled right through the tube on the upper 90 degree bend (see posted image) Obviously I've been in contact with the supplier who's trying to fob me off by saying that they have to do this otherwise the tube would explode during the gavanising process.....and they are all like this though couldn't explain if this was the case why that they couldn't just drill a hole on the underside of the top bar....

Your comments would be appreciated :- Thanks Bosh(Bob)

Ps Sorry can't work out how to post an image
