Cameron McNeish also blogged about the Snow Roads audax:

http://www.cameronmcneish.co.uk/2012/06/the-snow-roads/

Initially hesitant: "Someone described an audax to me as a cycling event for middle-aged men with beards and rickety old bikes with mudguards and lights"

But then, afterwards: "I knew very little about audax events before this weekend and I was really, really impressed. Might even consider doing one myself in the future!"

Front panniers handy on small wheeled bikes too. E.g. http://www.flickr.com/photos/birdybikeblog/6007959334/

Mull2Muckle: The Scottish end-to-end - http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=5836

"not often you here 'front low-riders' discussed in public"

Or seen either -

Front panniers

When I first went touring I use front panniers - though low-riders hadn't been invented.

Main advantage is less weight over rear wheel and reduced chance of spokes breaking. Must also deform tyre less and improve rolling resistance.

Fun when you try to ride after taking them off - steering different!

Some people don't like panniers at all -
