Interesting translation of SI units, I always thought that 30 km/h was 18.64 mph.

"it looks like they put in separated cycle lanes, lots of cycle parking, and cycle rental scheme."

Also

"velocitat màxima permesa és de 30 km/h."

That PDF document is written in Catalan. Select chunks and paste here -

@chdot So what are the lessons? Maybe someone with better Spanish could tell us how they did it. There is stuff here, it looks like they put in separated cycle lanes, lots of cycle parking, and cycle rental scheme.

One of things I have managed to glean from using translation tools is that the cycles schemes have generated about 300 new jobs. Now that is the sort of thing which makes politicians sit up and take notice!

@cb That's interesting, I was in Madrid for a few days last year (I have never been to Barcelona) and folds were the most common bikes there as well, maybe this a Spanish thing.

"When the bicycle manifesto was adopted at the Barcelona 2006 1st Bicycle Congress, a lot of us knew that the goals laid out in the document would not be achievable in the short term. We realised immediately that many of the aims, statements and desires expressed therein could only be considered long-term objectives."

http://www.congresbicicat.org/en/index.html

YES IT CAN - but will it?

"Barcelona stunned me. The city has gone from bicycle-non existent to bicycle metropolis in only 5 short years. It even makes Paris pale in comparison."

I was in Barcelona in April 2006 for a few days. I remeber seeing a very large percentage of folding bikes, although not many where I actually recognised the brand. I think there were quite a few "shoppers".
However, not once did I see one of these folding bikes actually folded or being folded. Don't recall seeing any on the underground.

Apparently the number of cyclist in Barcelona has increased by 55.91% in four years! In large part due to a public cycle rental scheme and changes in infrastructure. Maybe someone with better Spanish could tell us how they did it.
