To be fair it's a pretty inclusive website which gives lots of information about driving, walking, cycling, ambulances, and patient transport. There are links to spokes, walkit.com and many public transport options as well as informing of limited parking and parking charges in the surrounding areas. Apart from warning of the dangers of driving after a head injury think it's pretty good.

But not for the reason of being too sick to drive.

"Actually, having just reread what you said I realise that it is NHS Lothian and not Sick Kids. IN which case that is ridiculous. Too sick to walk but never too sick to drive a car?"

Cheers all, better find out if the ENT is best accessed from the main entrance. Wouldn't be the first time I got completely lost in that place.

Arellcat, I keep forgetting about OSM. I'm tempted to email that link to the NHS Lothian and get them to stick up on the cycling page so at least people can see where the racks are.

OpenCycleMap shows bike parking as little blue squares:

http://www.opencyclemap.org/?zoom=17&lat=55.93823&lon=-3.19049&layers=B00

but this doesn't apply to "any convenient railings". Maybe OCM needs a new icon!

"No attempt to say don't drive if you're the patient; don't walk if your not feeling well take the car its ok to operate 1.5t of steel when could be a bit distracted..."

To be fair, if you are going to the Sick Kids as a patient you probably will not be driving anyway since you are a kid. It still sucks that they actively discourage walking and cycling. They must be keen on getting repeat business I suppose from ill, inactive kids.

There's some railings across from the side entrance, by someone's house that we usually use. not ideal.

I took daughter to ER once by bike - she'd fallen nursery just as I was collecting her and had quite a bad scalp wound which I thought needed more than plaster, especially as I was at home alone with her. Seemed most efficient to pop her in the seat and take her along. They pinned it together, and she still has a scar, so probably as well I did take her in. They looked a bit askance though when we filled in the 'how did you arrive' section of the form.

There are a couple of covered racks to the left of the main entrance, which were usually free when I had to pop there a few times last year, particularly at three in the morning. Otherwise Melville Terrace (and westerly continuations) provide plenty of friendly railing.

Any one know where and of what quality the cycle parking is at the Sick Kids (Edinburgh)?

Need to take the coxwean to the ENT in a couple of weeks and the bus is a bit of a hassle due to having to intercept and transfer across two routes.

I had a look on the NHS Lothian site, not exactly cycle friendly for the Health Service:
"
Cycling or Walking
If you are a patient are you sure you want to walk or cycle? Consider the return trip."

"Parking Within NHS Lothian
It is advisable when attending or visiting the hospital to use public transport where possible, although we recognise that this may not be the best option in all circumstances."

No attempt to say don't drive if you're the patient; don't walk if your not feeling well take the car its ok to operate 1.5t of steel when could be a bit distracted...
