I had two drunk student types on Voi bikes behind me on my commute home. They were somewhat annoyed at me bike pushing over Lothian Road - In my defence I was merely escaping from their Karma.

A bit of a double whammy on my ride back from SQ on Saturday on the shiny new 2-way segregated cycle path at Haymarket.
I'm cycling along into town and on the other side of the cycle path there's a Deliveroonie and a chap on a Voi Bike. The Deliveroonie decided to do a Deliveroonie thing and stop dead without warning in the middle of the lane to check his mobile right in front of the Voi bike. The Voi bike then overtakes the Deliveroonie and is now heading towards me on my side of the path meaning that I have to slam on the anchors to avoid a head-on collision! If I hadn't had a tingling Spidey-sense it could have been pretty nasty.

@gembo - none that spring to mind, sorry. I suspect that this conflict arises only in the special circumstances of that junction, and on a normal piece of towpath they would pass without incident.

To the cyclist with a ginger beard who has twice in the past few weeks shouted 'get over' at me on the towpath near the bridge to the WoL path...

I've been riding the towpath daily since 2009, accumulating many thousands of trips, and you are the first person who has ever felt the need to shout that at me.

If you find yourself shouting it at other people too (and I suspect you might) then maybe look closer to home for the cause. I would respectfully ask to you ponder on whether bombing down the slope off the bridge over the canal and popping out onto the main towpath without, apparently, moderating your speed or, apparently, considering that maybe you are on the minor route and should be ceding priority to those on the major route, is the best approach to avoiding a collision in future. Speaking from long experience I'd say that people riding bikes on the towpath tend to ride in the centre of the path unless they see oncoming traffic in good time, in which case they move leftwards. If you are just going to pop out onto the towpath without warning, you may find that you don't give them time to move left as you so clearly want.

Just a thought, anyway...

Yesterday's rubbish cycling was the young-ish chap riding a Halfords special mountain bike-shaped object along the Brunstane Burn path just before 8am with no lights/high-vis/helmets/etc.

I'm not a member of the helmet/hi-vis police but the lack of lights along an unlit path with a generous coating of wet leaves seemed particularly reckless. He wasn't going very fast thankfully, probably due to not being able to see 10 feet beyond his front wheel.

Sorry to hear about your crash! If you haven't already get your hip checked out. I had a bad crash a few years ago which, although not broken, resulted in a large haemotoma and effectively stopped me playing football after that. I didn't know there was a shared-use path at Gowkley Moss but after this story I don't plan on using it anytime soon.

P.s.

Clearly an experienced cyclist like you was using the shared path on the reasonable assumption that it would be safer - particularly from the ‘you should be on the cyclepath’ brigade.

As you (and not enough people) know, cyclists don’t have to use paths or lanes.

I understand about resources/prioritises - which is why side roads and pavements don’t get gritted.

It took years for Spokes (and others) to get Edinburgh’s path network treated as a priority (or at all!) MidL need to understand it needs to do the same in key places.

I’ll completely understand if you don’t feel like contacting MidL.

That’s not rubbish cycling it’s rubbish grifting!

Suggest you send MidL a provisional email, with photos, telling them they will be getting a bill.

Or just let CycleLaw do all that. (Damage not just to bike.)

My bike disappeared from underneath me this evening, at Gowkley Moss roundabout. The roads were fine and recently gritted but the shared path around it was an ice rink.

I landed hard on my elbow which is now sporting a gash that I have mopped up and bandaged, and the impact tore both my nice merino jersey that was a present and my old but good Goretex jacket. I haven't broken my hip but there is going to be a huge bruise there tomorrow. I also landed on my rucksack which contained some Christmas presents I bought this afternoon. My lovely brake levers that lasted 15+ years without a scratch now have one that is pristine and one that is all scraped to hell.

I'd report it to Midlothian but it's just not worth it.

Half a dozen road cyclists using the footway at the closed bit of the Duddingston Low Road. Most of them were fine - going slowly and prepared to stop. The one at the front was not going slowly and was also shouting "Get out of the way" at pedestrians.

First time in a long time that I've sworn at a cyclist, but it was justified. Wish I'd insisted that he apologise to the folk he'd shouted at.

Sorry to hear you got bashed up, neddie. I have had scary slides on that roundabout too. Report it to Midlothian Council, but I can tell you that they will take absolutely no action other than recording the incident in their database, even if you are injured.

I know this because I did a FOI to find out what action they took after I bruised and cracked my ribs in a fall on a roundabout that was similarly near a petrol station.

So the bike disappeared from underneath me on the tight roundabout outside the petrol station at the A1 / Old Craighall Rd this morning

Came down hard on my shoulder and now have a fragment of bone chipped off the top of the arm

Suspect there was a diesel spill there, mixed in with a bit of water

Even though no other vehicle was involved, I sort of want to report it, so it’s recorded and the powers that be hear that diesel spills cause injuries

I guess Midlothian council and Spokes should be informed, but who else?

@bakky good point plus nice new tarmac. I noticed many rocks have fallen off the castle cliffs and crushed the old fence. Thankfully the space has been created to cater for this.

Going the other way you have to push until South Bridge. But the Cowgate whilst having many frolicsome tourists is sort of shut to motors which is lovely.

Agree with @Yodhrin on 1and 2. I had recce’d 2 on foot Saturday when out for a sherbet. Tiny gap to right of barrier then easy enough to cycle along. As far as 1 is concerned, I finally figured that out. So yesterday I was spot on with 1 AND 2. A LITTLE EARLIER at -1 I found i came off CCWEL a little earlier so was not quite at the Cathedral cut through so did have to foot push down the pavement a bit, which ain’t cool

ejstubbs Regarding 1, as far as I can tell the route is to turn left as you come out of the alley that lets you onto Charlotte Square and follow it around, then hang a right into the cycle track on the eastern arm of the square and pull up at the button that's about level with the lights and, when you get a cycle green, proceed forward a little and then turn left onto George Street(dodging the inevitable peds ignoring the red man). That's how I've been doing it anyway.

On 2, there's actually a designated cycle lane on the north side of the closed section of George Street but the gaps in the barrier(at the middle of the road ends) are tiny and unmarked and the cycle lane standee signs blew down in the big storm and seem to have just been dragged off into the ether by the people running the attractions.

And yeah the whole town is a nightmare zone right now as always during the festival. I had to apologise to a couple the other day for getting grumpy with them at one of the Picardy gyro cycle lane zebras for just refusing to cross the bloody thing despite me already having stopped and put my foot down - turned out they were Canadian and didn't realise bikes are supposed to stop for peds at those. There are so many bad bits where the gormless lemmings will just wander around and stare blankly as you roll toward them ringing the bell, or the ones that act like you've just set off a canon when you brake to let them over when they have priority and then start acting as if you did it on purpose to frighten them because who could ever expect bicycles to be travelling in the marked cycle lanes...

I'd be gloating about not having to endure it all full-time now, but apparently I've travelled far enough westwards that I now have to enjoy the Loyal Gammon Brigades tooting and harrumphing up and down my road all summer instead.

Went on a nice off road cycle with the boy 3 weeks ago, normally I'd take the MTB for that but given I had my shiny new gravel bike I thought I'd take that to see how it fared.

Exiting the tarmac path onto the rough off road path it was an almost U-turn, so instead of stepping off bike, i very carfully and slowly attempted to navigate the U-turn on the bike. Cue the commedy tip over at 1mph, unable to get my feeet out of the clips quick enough. Not done that in at least 20 years.

My empathetic son came running over to me to ensure I was OK. Me unaware of the blood running down my leg and pooling in my shoe was already up and making sure the bike was OK, annoyed that I'd scraped my brand new pannier rack, and chipped the left shifter (suppose it was going to happen at some point).

Anyway, I managed to stop the bleeding by licking my thumb and sticking it in the worst hole. We then carried on to have a lovely uneventful rest of day.

3 weeks, and a course of anitbiotics later after it got infected I still have to dress the wounds which are no where near healing yet. Going to be left with a lovely war wound, from the most innocuos of falls that really I should have known better to avoid.

(still annoyed I scraped the bike)

My rubbish cycling the other day was a result of a mistake on my part: trying to negotiate central Edinburgh on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the middle of festival season. Not helped by my deciding on a whim to try following CCWEL from Haymarket to Hanover Street - a route I'd never taken before.

Irritations included:

1) Extreme confusion when trying to cross from Charlotte Square to George Street. Confusing signage, and crossing light buttons which seemed to be facing the wrong way. How exactly are you supposed to cross safely & legally there?

2) George Street between Frederick Street and Hanover Street appeared to be closed to everything apart from pedestrians. There was a sign which seemed to direct me to ride along the pavement on the south side of the street but I decided that was unlikely to work well, given the crowds of people, so I carried on down Frederick Street and turned left on to Princes Street in an attempt to reach my short term goal: The Mound. Bad move. After getting myself in a total fankle, and at least one probably illegal manoeuvre born of major frustration (largely at my own lack of experience negotiating that area on a bike) I ended up going over Waverley Bridge and up Market Street.

3) The high number of oblivious and at times suicidal (especially at the lights at the top of Market Street) pedestrians. The cycling side of Middle Meadow Walk was vastly more overrun than usual and I'm afraid that I resorted to quite a lot of assertive ringing of my bell going down there.

To cap it all, Marchmont Road turned out to have a massive trench down the southbound side and was closed to traffic in that direction. Being in a pretty low mood by that point, I was unimpressed at the suggested diversion route along the cobbles of Thirlstane Road.

A diversion through the greenery of Braid Burn Valley Park did help to cheer me up a bit on the last stretch of my way home.

@bakky chapeau! Heroes don't wear capes, they ride bicycles.

I finally got round to sticking the video clip on Youtube for adjudication.

Finally I've confirmed that there is a blue one-way sign at the bottom near the barriers.

To lend some credence to the one-way theory; short version, I've been stopped with two kids in the bakfiets heading up the other way from the roundabout, up the southernmost aspect of Queens drive. While I had reasons™, the rangers stopped me and essentially said it was dangerous and not to on account of folks coming flying down the hill. The same, one would expect is true in reverse, and that it's park policy.

Longer version; we headed up the correct way as @mcairney was, to park at Dunsapie loch and climb the summit. When we got there we found a lass and her two friends on speakerphone with the ambulance service. She'd been doing a Geography society running relay to the summit and back, and just as she'd gotten back down to the relatively gentle slopes near Dunsapie had had a tumble and badly sprained an ankle.

The ambulance folk were saying the road's closed, we can't come get you for a sprain. The ice cream van man was saying, if I take you down the hill I lose my pitch and my income for the day as I can't get back up. And I said - hey look at this weird bike you'd fit in.

We needed to collapse the raincover and after a bit of faff, delivered her (going the right way) down to the roundabout for her to get a cab home and get some ice on. Cargo biking ambulance style!

My phone dinged to say my house keys (airtag) were at Dunsapie loch. Remember the 'faff'? I had dropped them in the middle of the road. By this point my mini paramedics had had enough, so I figured take the shorter way up, watch the corners / sight lines, likely hunky dory. Rangers were polite and very chill, and I said I'd switch to the pavement for the remainder of the climb. We recovered the keys, then handed in to the ice cream van man, and had a 99 flake to redeem the juniors dispositions.

I am yet to buy some blue lights, but that's the long version of how I found out it was a one way circuit!

“Am I being overly-precious in my assertion that they're going the 'wrong way' on a marked one-way road when the road is closed to motor traffic?”

Essentially you’re not.

Assuming it’s legally one way (it’s HP, so room for some doubt) It’s unlikely that ‘being closed’ removes the onewayness.

However even if person on bike wasn’t technically going ‘the wrong way’, sounds like they were riding without care or attention which in some circumstances could be subject to sanctions.

In any case they were clearly acting stupidly!

I don't like that junction when I'm riding with the lights, not one I'd like to ride against the lights.

(I have also done this, btw, just not that junction!).
