Appears to be some sort of road closure and 1-way signalled system on London Road at Abbeyhill where Abbey Lane / Lower London Road joins London Road at Cadzow/ Earlston Place*.

Queues all the way back down London Road towards Meadowbank all morning (it's normally quiet after about 830AM.) Nobody seems to realise the bus lane is off-peak and they can use it, but the few people who do are getting to the top only to find that it's blocked and they can't squeeze back in to the outside lane.

(* = Abbeyhill follows the traditional Edinburgh practice of naming the major roads by where they are ultimately going but also individually naming the individual building/blocks on them.)

I agree in spirit but I'm not sure I'd want someone's first experience of cycling to be a negotiation of Picardy Place roundabout this morning.

Yes, they would need to make an actual effort, including coning off areas of road for cyclists to use. But apparently it is fine to do that to make non-existant holes in the road so why not to encourage people to cycle?

I agree in spirit but I'm not sure I'd want someone's first experience of cycling to be a negotiation of Picardy Place roundabout this morning. Coned-off space for cycling is probably too much to ask for (and would be quite complex to implement) but some bus priority would be nice. I'm sure we'll see some evaporation if the works continue.

Is the Picardy Place closure actually to stop people diverting along East London Street/Broughton Road to avoid the Leith Walk roadworks?

Wait a minute, I recognise that sound. That is the sound of another perfect opportunity for a huge drive to get people out of their cars and onto bikes being missed yet again.

And to confirm. There are absolutely no holes in the Picardy Place entrance to Broughton Street whatsoever. Well, no more than usual.

The roundabout has the outside lane closed between Broughton Street and Picardy Place. The outside lane of Picardy Place is also closed and by the time it hit's Union Place, 2 of the 3 lanes are closed.

Fun times were had by all.

The roundabout is pretty interesting in the morning, yes...

I've been diverting via Union Street (currently closed too, but only because of work on the main road so a quick dismount is all that's required.) Cutting immediately left along the lane to Broughton Street misses lots of downhill cobbliness for a smaller amount of level but heavily cambered cobbliness. Gayfield Square is an option too.

From Broughton Spurtle;

9. Broughton Street, at Picardy Place/York Place

Trial holes to determine utility locations (St James redevelopment project).

No northbound access from Picardy roundabout.

The roundabout was fun this morning, I got stuck on it with an LGV on the left of me aiming and a Transit Luton van tight up to the kerb infront of me, both aiming for York Place, so there was no safe way to filter through.

"Now, do be careful at that roundabout at Mansfield Place."

Not too bad north - south.

Down BS and right into ELSt. is seriously bad for people not stopping (coming up from Rodney St.)

At least travelling up from the coast, it's no big deal to dismount and push for a few yards to get to Queen St. Not sure about the other way around (as I came through the path through the bushes to the east end of the works, I didn't check out any possible crossings at the western end).

More vitally, the road closure has removed traffic from the upper stretches of the road so I can officially declare Strava season open on Broughton St!

Meant to write this yesterday to give people warning. Checked out the closure and the fenced off bit is quite small and so easily walked past but lanes are closed off at the roundabout and Picardy Place and the whole place looks rather hostile to cycling. Think I'll just avoid it all.

One amazing thing which I have NEVER seen before is that there are temporary crossing lights for pedestrians. Yes, pedestrians have actually been considered and not just left to run across several lanes of traffic as best they can!

Normally I'd say this is fine because you can use the national cycle network to connect Canonmills with town, but of course that's also a huge tram site... sigh.

Not clear to me what they actually want to do - I wouldn't have thought there was room on Picardy Place for two way traffic (thinking about vehicles getting around the west corner in particular).

Sounds like I may be having to push through the crowds around the pit at either end of the day. Last time it was dug up it wasn't part of my commute.

To my great joy, Broughton Street is going to be closed from this Saturday (16th June) for four weeks (and the rest..).

Users will have to cyclocross their way through the obstacle course some other way.
