I recommend the trailer option, but then I don't want to think I just wasted a bundle of notes, so I would say that.

I'd be amazed if the scheme would buy a trailer too, so I'd hazard a guess at using it for £800 worth of tractor bike and getting the trailer himself.

At that price point, my Googling suggests the low gearing, sturdy frame and beefy brake requirements point to a hybrid with pretensions of touring or MTBing.

This is why I reckon there's a gap in the market for my trailer+tractor sold as pair idea.

That'd be a Trek? I know there's not much difference, but...

Practical Cycles are great, but no longer stock the Kona Ute since they became a Surly dealer...

They sell the Yuba Mundo and Xtracycle kits, which are close to a Ute but the Mundo is 26" wheels, pretty heavy and a bit burly in comparison. The Xtracycle needs a donor bike.

Or suggest a bike and a trailer to combine commuting / cycling and cargo hauling.

If you want a cargo bike, I would try giving Practical Cycles a call:

http://www.practicalcycles.co.uk/page5.htm

They are included in Cyclescheme and Bike2Work, which might be sufficient, depending on DaveC's work's arrangement.

I've bought from SingletrackBikes before - good service - but I think they're mail order only, no bricks-and-mortar premises that I can find.

I suppose the issue is his LBS and who they have as distributors. If he is free to shop around with his voucher, I'm pretty confident there will be some Kona Utes kicking around in the UK in some warehouse somewhere...

For example Singletrack Bikes in Bonnyrig have it listed.

A Kona Ute?

Maybe they don't make many of them. I think Kona are a bit like that.

There's also the MinUte, a cut down version...

Or for lighter loads, consider the Specialized Globe Haul, only 500 quid but no discs and rathed to 50kg on the rear onkly.

A Kona Ute, like wot crowriver has? Last time I was in Alpine in Stockbridge they had a demo model of a Specialised Transport Plus that I was quite enamoured with until I realised I had no need for it. £1000. That was over a week ago. Could be gone.

A collegue at work has received his Voucher for his cycle to work scheme bike. H wants a ut? Spelling, but the shop refused to order a bike until the voucher came in. Now the voucher is in he's found out that every bike in Europe is apparently sold and there will be no more until next year? 2013. Eek.
