Why would shaving his legs be a perversion any more or less than shaving (or not) his face? Hair is hair surely and it's up to him whether to keep it long, short or missing surely?

You must hit the mute button when the adverts come on. The ITV4 coverage has grown into an excellent show over the years.

I had letter published in guardian this week (maybe only electric version) linking earlier story where chris hoy claimed he shaves his legs to reduce times. I put forward the proposition that if this was true ( rather than injury cleaning or just perversion) then someone shOuld have a word with Bradley about his ridiculous sideburns, the drag they cause must slow him down markedly

It's worse when you watch the live coverage. Because it's daytime on a channel way down at the low rent end of the spectrum it's all ambulance chasing lawyers and cheap loan companies... quite a window on what the average daytime tv viewer is assumed to be in need of

Over here in the SRD household, we're getting kinda into this tdf thing. the adverts are appalling though. we now realise how much we watch the beeb, and channel 4 on catchup (which cuts out most of the adverts). if only itv did the same.

Mr Bradley Wiggins' resemblance to a certain forum poster stiff gets lots of amused chuckles, but we're also rather taken with 'Bramley Wiggins' as a nom d'forum for our wee lad ;)

"I think the logic here is to keep the rim and tyre as light as is possible, worth shaving off a gram or 2 in some people's eyes to have lighter wheels for accellerating / climbing."

"Main reason is that deep-rim carbon wheels about half the price tubs vs. clinchers"

That makes sense (in a situation where tubs still 'rule').

Obviously this is another world to me...

So I'm still surprised that tubs didn't become 'obsolete' in the changing face of fashion/technology.

@baldcyclist Actually I'm not to sure increased weight would be a problem, aren't all the bikes quite a bit under the legal weight anyway? The teams usually have to add weight to the bikes to make them legal, so heavier tubes not likely to be an issue

I think the logic here is to keep the rim and tyre as light as is possible, worth shaving off a gram or 2 in some people's eyes to have lighter wheels for accellerating / climbing.

Whether I want to "have a good old debate about tubs vs clinchers" is a different question entirely!!

(But thanks for the info.)

How many 'normal' amateurs still ride tubs?

Plenty. Main reason is that deep-rim carbon wheels about half the price tubs vs. clinchers. Worth the faff of the tubular tyre to save a lot of money. I've got a pair for the yet-completed TT bike infact.

@chdot my boyfriend has tubs on his TT bike. Go onto the triathlon forums and you can have a good old debate about tubs vs clinchers. Whether you want to describe triathletes as 'normal' is a different question entirely...

Maybe only for the sprinters - the additional weight at the rims might make them split-secondly slower to accelerate. If I am remembering my science correctly.

More exiting (term applied loosely) tyre news, Europecar (i think) are using tubes which seal themselves if punctured. They have deemed the increased weight not to be a problem.

Actually I'm not to sure increased weight would be a problem, aren't all the bikes quite a bit under the legal weight anyway? The teams usually have to add weight to the bikes to make them legal, so heavier tubes not likely to be an issue...
