Council figures estimate around 70,000 pedestrians use the pavement on any given Saturday.</p> <p>A trams information leaflet from 2009 concluded: "At any location in the city centre there simply isn't enough road space to meet everyone's wishes. To allow a cycle lane that complies with UK standards, a significant area of footway space would need to be removed.</p> <p>"In simple terms, the benefits to cyclists are outweighed by the detriment to pedestrians, particularly given the number of users involved."</em></p> <p>And yet, just last year somehow Gehl architects' Master Plan for the city centre found space for wide pavements <em>and</em> cycle lanes in each direction on Princes Street <em>and</em> George Street. </p> <p>How did they perform this miracle? Simple. They removed buses from Princes Street and George Street; removed cars from Princes Street; removed car parking from George Street, just providing one lane for cars each way. </p> <p>Very simple and something the Council could, and should implement. That would require them to not cave in to every shopkeeper and car driver who thinks driving along Princes Street and parking on George Street are essential.</p> <p>Instead, we've got this mish-mash.
