It's not just in Marchmont, that operates all over the city, that system. Methinks enforcement of double parking, etc. needs to be decriminlaised so that local authorities can issue fixed penalties...

@cc don't forget the Marchmont "two in a bed" parking system, where car on the double yellow gets a ticket and the fruitshop vans double parked alongside it get off because that's "for the Police to deal with"

and you can park all day every day on double yellows in Marchmont at least. Great way to encourage people to live in lovely Edinburgh, not.

Don't forget parking and/or loading on double reds at junctions! I see this almost every day round Brunswick Road/McDonald Road. Unbelievable!

Yes at first I thought this was directly opening single-yellows cycle lanes up to parking, then I recalled that you can do that anyway "out of hours", but I guess what it means is more encouragement to drive into town, therefore by default more likelihood of bad or inconsiderate parking on corners, single yellows, cycle lanes etc. Either way, we all lose.

I'm sure those with resident's permits wil be absolutely delighted to see lots of Fringe types bag their parking spaces. I anticipate an epidemic of double parking blocking cycle lanes across the city!

The "new" council maintaining the traditions of old by demonstrating that parking isn't about trying to make the city centre a pleasant environment, or a safe one, it's all about the rattle-rattle, ker-ching of coins in parking meters and if someone stumps up the "revenue" then changes can be made quite easily.

Wonder how much cyclists would have to raise to buy the "rights" for parking in cycle lanes, and then promptly revoking them!

You have to applaud the council's double-think that the west end can act both as a free-parking-fest and the diversion for Haymarket all at the same time!

Free Edinburgh city centre parking during the Festival

Parking in Edinburgh city centre is to be free from 17:00 during the Edinburgh Festival.

The 'Alive after 5' campaign, run by Edinburgh City Council, Marketing Edinburgh and Essential Edinburgh, will see shops remaining open until 19:00.

It will run from 6 August until 1 September and could be repeated during December for the winter festivals.

The £55,000 lost income from the free parking, will be paid for by the three campaign organisers.

The streets include: Charlotte Square, Frederick Street, George Street, Glenfinlas Street, Hill Street, North Castle Street, North St Andrew Street, Queen Street, St Andrew Square, St Colme Street, Thistle Street, Young Street, Ainslie Place, Alva Street, Atholl Crescent, Chester Street, Coates Crescent, Drumsheugh Gardens, Great Stuart Street, Manor Place, Melville Crescent, Melville Street, Palmerston Place, Randolph Lane, Randolph Place, Rothesay Place, Rothesay Terrace, Rutland Square, Rutland Street, Stafford Street, Walker Street, William Street, Forth Street, Little King Street, Picardy Place, Register Place, Union Street, Waterloo Place, Annandale Street, Barony Place, Barony Street, Broughton Place, Brunswick Road, Brunswick Street, Elm Row, Gayfield Square, Gayfield Street, Hart Street, Hopetoun Crescent, McDonald Road, Montgomery Street, New Broughton, Windsor Street.
