I still find hillwalking gear the best for shorter trips and utility cycling around town. Anything slightly longer distance and I'm looking out the bibs these days...

has now progressed to 'needing' different types of bib shorts/tights for different conditions on longer rides.

Never mind longer rides... I was thinking I might want a different weight of biblong just to get to the office!

In the end I settled on a new jacket instead, rather than my gilet and arm warmers under my long sleeve jersey.

That extra windproofing has brought my existing longs up to scratch as part of the overall system.

First winter in years that I've ridden with bike-specific stuff and quite enjoying it, frankly. Previously my wardrobe was my hillwalking wardrobe (detailed here).

I love MEC - cant visit Canada without shopping there!
The warranty they give on their own-brand stuff is awesome too.

I have the Extremities version of that Lowe Alpine cap, although it looks like they don't make it any more. (Hadn't realised until I checked just now that Extremities are part of terra Nova).

Not the best-looking thing, but when the chips are down, a Lowe Alpine cap is the one we wear up mountains.

I had a Berghaus hat in that style. Was great for the two freezing cold winters year before last and year before that. Then left it in Glasgow and never saw it again. Le sigh.

Yes. MEC is a co-op like REI. But Canadian. not sure if you get dividends or not (REI does).

(edit - just browsed up higher and discovered that I started this thread. how funny).

Wearing my MEC merino vest as I type. actually had it on all day. love it :)

It looks bloody stupid but my Outdoor Research Peruvian Hat is excellent.

How about C+1. I could open a computer shop (or a computer museum) with the number of obsolete things that are kicking around here.

Oh, tell me about it. Technical 'apparel' (jackets, shorts, hats, gloves, jerseys) n+1 has now progressed to 'needing' different types of bib shorts/tights for different conditions on longer rides. Never thought I'd wear them, but they are just much more comfy than standard shorts/tights/leggings/trousers over distance...

n+1 also applies to luggage carrying options: racks (rear and front), panniers (rear and 'universal'), bar bags, saddle bags, trailers, etc., etc. etc.

One day I'll have to get someone versed in feng shui/zen minimalism to declutter my accumulated assortment of bike stuff. Maybe even have a go at the bike 'stable' too...

Hat slightly similar to a "Belgian" winter cycling cap. Latter has a stiffened peak, a baggier top formed from distinct panels and also the roll-down neck/ear warmer. I got one in a sale, Giro brand, in merino. Excellent piece of headgear. The Prendas one I got was too small and the peak was too floppy.

How about M+1? Bought a new computer mouse today. It's a roadbike equivalent of a mouse. However I do spend a good deal of my spare time with my hand clamped to the thing, so figured I could justify the cost for something that isn't going to land me with carpal tunnel quite so quickly.

MEC stuff is the dogs', um, I mean it is the bee's knees. I've a couple of sets of their thermal base layers. And waterproofs. And some gloves. All as a result of having an aunt in Vancouver and parents happy to go shopping for me when they visit her...

n+1 does, however, also apply to bikes.

Think I've dug up a Surly Karate Monkey frame+fork lurking in London for a reasonable amount. This will be the perfect light(ish), singlespeed, offroad/muddy/29er/cyclocross-starting/snow-playing bike.

If I do happen to acquire it, you are allowed to beat me with scales if it ever appears with a pannier rack, ideally whilst shouting "but you already HAVE a sensible bike!"

Very nice - I am also contemplating some of the hats at the bottom of This page - bought some gear from them before, I really like the wool caps.

Discovered that N+1 also applies to 'technical clothing'...what shall I wear when my middy tights are being washed??

browsing MEC catalogue for holiday shopping and spotted this rather cute and cosy looking hat. thought some of you guys/gals would like it. would think it was ideal for Edinburgh commutes.
