I cycled the Cramond prom again this eve and missed Tuesdays time by 5 blumin seconds! Darn cars at Granton round about meant I failed to match/beat my best time. Wind today and Tuesday was minimal but in my favour as it was NE.

Altitude based on GPS readings when crossing the Forth Road Bridge tend to be crazy, from my experience. Using a barometric altimeter is much more reliable.

Anyone else find that Strava is hugely flakey on Android? It usually only manages to record around 3km before crashing and causing the phone to reboot.

It's done that to me a couple of times but generally works absolutely fine. On a couple of other occasions the phone has crashed and reooted at some point during the ride. I've come home to find Strava not running, but the next time I've opened the app it's asked me if I want to keep my unsaved data! So it has somehow kept recording despite the phone crash. Don't ask me how that works...

Smudge, Strava's website implies that most GPSes aren't supported. If your Foretrex can generate a GPX file on your computer, you can use Strava.

It's a bit of a faff for me, because the Garmin Communicator plugin doesn't work properly on my computer, but I use my 60CSx with Strava quite happily.

Garmins' barometric altimeters can give some pretty odd results if the wind's up. On a few occasions I've been surprised to find myself cycling up a 40% hill when the road looked to me to be perfectly flat. One hell of a false flat.

I believe Strava uses your bariometric data if it has it - but if there isnt any data, it uses a database based on GPS location (and other peoples data for the same route).

Several people have said on forums that Strava's data may be more accurate than the bariometric data, because its crowd-sourced from many different users.

However, I dont think that's true (yet): https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/20965883-elevation-correction-for-your-activity

Does strava rely on GPS for altitude data? If so it's always going to be a largely wrong approximation for anything but large climbs as a result of innacuracies of trying to determine your vertical position using triangulation

Both of my Garmins (Edge 800, Forerunner 910xt) have barometric altimeters, which I am led to believe is much more accurate than determining your altitude from GPS.

Yep, my power estimate is often lower than people below me, I assume because I'm not quite as chunky as I used to be.

As I now have a powertap hub, I guess I'll soon be able to put real figures on Strava, assuming the app is capable of recording it.

I think the power data is a calculation Strava does based on speed, altitude gain and your weight. I can only assume that the 700W guy has entered his weight wrong (or is rather heavy - perhaps Chris Hoy in disguise ;o) ).

Although mine does, I'm not sure that Strava app actually uses it. I think I'd need to upload a proper gpx trace to their website and then create a segment off that.

It doesn't really matter since the ground is at a given altitude for everybody at a certain lat/long- the leaderboard is an even playing field, even if we don't know how steep it is ;-)

If so it's always going to be a largely wrong approximation for anything but large climbs as a result of innacuracies of trying to determine your vertical position using triangulation. Even using topo models wouldn't be that accurate for such short runs, and I doubt most people's phones have a proper barometric altimeter in them like a hillwalking GPS does.

700 watt is pro level with additives....

A cautionary note that Lothian buses are now coming down the Mound, doing a u-turn at George St and then going back up the Mound...

Since the closure of Broughton St I've been riding through the tunnel at Canonmills and thence up Hanover and the Mound. Until the other day this involved walking across George St as it was only partially open, so today I walked across even though it's no longer a vomit zone of cones, and said bus driver wanted to drive through where I was walking (which was, to be fair to him, where he wanted to drive).

We had a wee verbal rummage, after which I took the glorious Strava KOM for climbing the first half of the Mound.
