"At minimum they could offer the solution you get on the longer distance services."

They will, but that won't be enough for weekends and summer school holiday time - and probably at normal commuting times.

The 'room for 8' was due to demand - and then more people used it.

But it's not like the good ol' days..

ahh, that's sad. Thought the train was okay, bit older but certainly not that shabby. Don't know if the area was used really that well, it only has 8 spaces, they could fit several more in there.

Never sure about bikes just sitting in vestibules, particularly the non chain-guarded hybrid mountain bike effort that seems to prevail here. At minimum they could offer the solution you get on the longer distance services..

Well, i did my law-breakin' rabble rousing bit and rose down the prom, but did so very courteously :) otherwise ride out to Prestonpans was really rather excellent, and getting train back to edinburgh park really worked to get back to my office.

Took this route (starting from where I cast my vote at South Leith Parish Halls)

http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=2461884

"But years and years back an elderly person living in a house bordering the prom got hit by a cyclist"

About the same time so was a man - doubly unfortunate he used to be an ENews photographer...

I have a small theory that some people on bikes who know they are not supposed to ride there do so at (inappropriate) speed to get away quicker....

So if we all promise to ride with care perhaps we should ask the local councillors (nicely) to do something.

Ward 17 - Portobello / Craigmillar

Seriously, I wounldn't. Like you say, as long as you do it courteously people won't bother. I contacted a local councillor about it a while back and she was sympathetic to the idea of it being an official cycle route, especially since the road through Portobello can be rather busy and the surface bad.

But years and years back an elderly person living in a house bordering the prom got hit by a cyclist and broke her leg, and so cyclists on the prom are historically seen as dangerous.

It would be interesting to know the stats for injuries sustained by people caused by cars on the Porty High Street...

"what do you mean small no?? it's red!!

As long as you're courteous you can ride wherever you want!"

Sadly not legally true, though I have to admit to having cycled on the prom very very often. The Evening News columns and commenters would have you believe it's some sort of war zone, but as recombodna says, ride courteously and no-one bats an eyelid (certainly never have to me). I'll admit I only ride there knowing the police have stated that it's a sensible alternative and as long as you're careful they won't do you.

And red? Hell, most of the lanes in the city centre aren't red. And in Holyrood Park red actually signifies the pedestrian path, with the cycle lanes in green... ;)

Small no.

Not legal, but police accept that it's a sensible alternative to High Street so won't try to stop you unless you're 'riding furiously'.

As Anth says, with a fat-tyred bike you have the option of going round the coast, past the ash lagoons making a huge part of the journey off-road. There's a nice new tarmac path been put there which will take you all the way to Prestonpans. On Sunday though a short section was closed but there's an alternative footpath and the road as well of course.

Not sure about the 'quietest' route - I've cycled round on the John Muir way before, which hugs the coast more, and when I last walked it (a few weeks ago) it had become a fat-tyre-only sort of route.

I've got a meeting in prestonpans tomorrow morning (looks pretty much like a eastwards version of my morning commute), and the quiet route on cyclestreets was routing me through some green bits in musselburgh, are these cycle paths?

This is the suggestion from Cyclestreets
