It's been open for the last year - until the past week or so. I walked up it just before Christmas when the path was under a foot of water just beyond the top of the dean valley steps (the metal ones).

The previous closure there was absolutely no sign of any risk what so ever and was H&S gone mad.

On this occasion photos have been posted showing basically the path has sunken in to the river. If walking down river, it's just before the long steel steps.

It's a steep diversion route out and back in to the valley hence why myself and many others ignore it. More risk of being hit by a bus on Princes Street.

##################

Just to add that there's another bit of the WOL closed between Newhaven road and Albert Street (?). Seems there's been a land dispute which involves a collapsing wall and a bent bit of railing. Twitter's down so I can't find the article on it.

It's been open for a couple of months.

The diversion sign was up at Sunbury Bridge on Sunday. The group in front of us ignored it and followed the muddy track round the barrier.

Went down that path a couple of times at that start of term back in August, very nice. I did not notice any cracks. Hopefully will reopen for lighter mornings and evenings?

However, I did notice that the metal jetty suspended above the river at the Hilton is very rusty and has a hole starting to appear in the sheet metal

There must be another thread saying it was opened.

BUT

"

Due to a report received from a member of the public who noticed rocks on and cracks in the Dean Path, the decision has been taken to close the section of Water of Leith Walkway from Sunbury Bridge to Dean Path steps due to slope movement. Stabilisation work was carried out on this section of walkway/embankment last year and the area now needs to be re-surveyed to determine any new risk of further slope movement. Barriers are in the process of being erected to secure the area. A full investigation will be carried out by specialists to determine the stability of the slope and the health and safety risks to the public before this section can be re-opened.

Please note that a section of the Water of Leith Walkway between Dean Path Steps and Sunbury Bridge has been closed due to a high risk of landslip.

Barriers have been erected with explanatory signage and directions to alternative routes. The Natural Heritage will inspect and maintain these as necessary.

Based on a preliminary assessment by Bridges & Structures the risk at this stage is significant. The section of path cannot be re-opened until a full engineering assessment has been carried out and any required stabilisation works carried out. Given the pressures across the City from the recent adverse weather, a time scale for this work cannot be confirmed at this stage. I will provide an update when timescales can be confirmed, but for the time being the path will remain closed.

Please share this information as required and any enquiries about the closure, barriers and signage, or progress of works should be directed to the Natural Heritage Service on 0131 447 7145 or naturalheritageservice@edinburgh.gov.uk
