"The smartphone/tablet battles are all patent related"

True - though there have been trademark/domain name conflicts - not least 'ownership' of "iPad" name in China.

Interesting pair of reviews. For my purposes (primarily as a note taking and reading device), it's pretty much spot on. Aspect ratio being tall and thin means that it just about fits into a trouser pocket. Not hugely comfortably, but well enough so I can also carry a mug and open doors with the other hand whilst moving around the office. Swiftkey as a keyboard negately the slightly tricky typing with it's magical auto-correct.

It's definitely different to the iPad. From refusing to believe that there was a function to tablets a year ago, I now reckon there's two classes of tablet, with the larger size starting to squeeze into the laptop market. In the smaller size band, I can't think of anything that beats the nexus.

Then again, I'd maybe wait until they sort the quality control out...

I doubt that they could sue as the copyright will be held in different categories.

The smartphone/tablet battles are all patent related (and extremely tedious).

I was unfairly critical - having actually picked the parcel up last night the full address was 'Home, Flat 0/2, Glasgow'.

Sadly, I also have to report that I'm one of many where the left hand side of the screen is lifting away from the body. Feels awfully like ASUS were hammered to try and get these out of the door, and didn't check the quality on the way out. Currently waiting on Google's customer support to get back to me, who are apparently swamped at the moment.

Not the most glorious start to Google's foray into product shipping.

Apart from that, it's great!

You might like to try OneNote, Darkerside.

Free apps for 'droids, iPhone and browsers and seamless integration with Skydrive and MSOffice. (And the searchable images thing too, of course)

One you start using one, it's tough to switch.....still sketch on paper then snapshot on phone straight into the notebook.

It does look like the lid of an iBook. Still pretty impressive to be that far advanced with the iPad. There's a similar story in the Isaacson biography of Jobs having a computer the size of a desk diary (so about the size of the titanium powerbook) designed and mocked up before they'd even built the first Macintosh and saying "this is what I was us to be building in the mid-80s".

I've started paying for Evernote, partly to get the 'allow others to edit shared notebooks' feature and partly becuase I use it heavily, so it seemed fair. The real shame is that the site is blocked on the MoD network.

I don't know. A stylus and Sketchbook Pro do a good job. Only limitation is that it helps to wear a thin cotton glove with the index finger and thumb end cut off to stop inadvertent clicking and scrolling when you're resting your hand on the screen.

"Call me old fashioned, but I have a sketchpad and an artist's roll full of pens, pencils and suchlike. Heavier, bulkier and probably mroe expensive than a tablet!"

For real sketching can't beat paper and pens. But site goes online digitally, and submissions for most bits of writing these days are digital. I've got (many) Moleskines for notekeeping as well, but transferring can be a pain. I 'prefer' notebooks, but practicality issues, and time-saving by not duplicating effort, make the tablet win out.

"My hope (albeit thought about after I'd actually placed the order) is to be able to use evernote to take notes"

For anyone who hasn't come across it -

Evernote is amazingly useful. It's cross-platform (on computers + mobiles) and can be used for text and images and clips from web pages. It will even OCR text in images (if it's clear enough - their examples include wine labels) so that text can be searched for (though not copied).

And it's free (monthly space allowance) unless you want to upload a lot of images.

Have to say I've found the tablet brilliant for typing on - had wondered if I'd need an external keyboard, but not a bit of it. Got my word processing app; got an html editor app; a brilliant photoshop-esque image manipulation app; script-writing app; and a fab notebook into which I can put scribbles to get my ideas into some sort of form. Use it so much more than a dinky netbook I used to have (which ran windows and so took half of lunchtime to start up and shut down).
