Like everyone I have an image of a bear prowling down a residential street and sniffing at the base of a tree, in the branches of which are two sheds. Greenroofer's shed is wearing a good pair of running spikes.

Offences such as pickpocketing, shoplifting and bicycle theft rose 2%, the only crime category to show a rise.

Oh, good point Cycle PC. On all the bikes I've owned the serial number has been under the bottom bracket (might need to scrape some mud off to find it). I bought my bike from Leith Cycles, who took a note of the serial number and recorded it next to my contact information. But it's obviously a good idea to make a note of it too - which I did, then have no idea where the bit of paper is with the number on. Will take a note again this evening

- thanks for the reminder PC!

Hi, the police check all bikes recovered for identifying marks and this includes serial numbers / tags. I would urge everyone to at least make a note of the numbers on your bikes, and if you are able, get it marked / tagged. It makes reuniting bike and owner a lot easier.

I take it that Police look for the serial number on the frame of any recovered bike, as well as any "tag"? After all, a serial number is a tag and if it's machined/stamped into the BB shell or stay, you'd have to machine the thing off!

When a break-in was attempted on our bikeshed a few months ago, the only thing they took was the screws that secured the hinges to the shed (that's how they got into it).

Note for CyclePC, if you hear that the haul of stolen property includes 8 off 4x50mm posidriv wood screws, they are probably mine. :-)

Note for would-be thieves. The shed now has one-way screws on all the hinges, and the bikes inside are secured via a high-strength U-lock and a high-tensile cable to a ground anchor fixed to the structure of the shed. There's now a security light shining on it. It's not completely theft-proof, but it's definitly more theft-proof than next door's shed...

"Detective Inspector Gordon McCreadie said: "At this time I would urge homeowners to make sure the security of their sheds and garages is up to standard, and if they choose to store their bikes within, then take measures to secure their bike to the structure. ""

"Officers have recovered £15,000 of bikes, bike parts and property and they are working to return it to the owners." -- I get the impression it IS worth getting your bike tagged, as a lot of stolen bikes are recovered:
E.g. When my bike was stolen (~5 years ago), the thief left another bike at the scene. The police took it, and if it had been tagged I assume it would have made its way back to its owner.
