Flat bars with metal end caps (or bare ends) are handy when large slab side vehicles force in to you. Rest and slide as you brake along the slab side and you leave a large score mark in the aluminium panel (usually this on a bus), remember to compensate as the end of the vehicle passes. Don't ask me how I know this.

Wing mirrors need a bit more notice (you see vehicle coming too close from behind) folding back mirror on truck or bus that passes too close (and in my case can easily hit my head) is generally achieved by raising your arm (to protect your head) . If the vehicle is too close your are may then strike the mirror which rather scunners the driving of the vehicle until the driver reset the mirror.

Photographs of the marks I made sliding down the side of a truck that tried to force me off the road (in a bike lane too) were sufficient to persuade the Police to have a word with him

no need to kick just make sure you compensate for the handle bars wanting to turn you left, push harder with the right hand ;)

Riding Moscow you'd have to be a bit nuts any way, some of the traffic cam footage I've seen is nuts!

In Soviet Russia cyclist hurts car.

Ski-bend bar ends on flat bars can be an advantage (don't ask me how I know this).

There's a great clip on YouTube of how cut-up cyclists in Russia deal with wing mirrors. Bam! Take that! as the thing goes flying. I can't access YT from work though, maybe someone else can find/post it.

@559, interesting that wingmirrorshop doesn't suggest that it might be the owner of the broken mirror who could be at fault! Of course it's always someone else.

Hadn't thought of that generally too busy having the discussion on driving abilities to even think about damaging wing mirrors

Usually go for dent in roof

Sorry, "mate"... by the Magnificent Octopus, on Flickr

It's not meant to be about ripping wing mirrors off, it's about "SMIDSY" not being a valid defence for driving into someone's bike, any more than it would be if a cyclist did decide to knock a wing mirror off.

I've been told that kicking is more effective, however I personally don't want to try if I can avoid it, as I think I'd be most likely to come down trying...

Looking for new glass for the car wing mirror
came across this website

http://www.wingmirrorshop.co.uk

Within their website came across the following text

"Our new xxxxx wing mirror glass are 100% guaranteed and we offer a full 12 month warranty against defects. So whether it's a cyclist, another driver or a vandal that has caused the damage to your xxxxx wing mirror glass we are here to help you find the correct wing mirror glass with the minimum of hassle"

Not aware of an epidemic of cyclists breaking wing mirrors unless you include when they hit you. Anyway decided not to buy from them.
