My ride to work goes from Slateford Road to the Bush Estate. There are PLENTY hills on that route. My version goes up Craiglockhart, along Colinton Mains, up Oxgangs road to Fairmilehead.

There are some pretty fast guys that head up that route about 5.30pm (opposite way to me). Try chasing one of them one day.

I noticed that it wasn't on the way down from Roslin and did think that that was a shame. On the way up, all the blood had been diverted to my legs/lungs (c.f. Obree on The Cycle Show) so I didn't notice.

There seem to be a lot of landslips in Midlothian - roads are closed at Lugton and south of Carrington currently.

I did that segment yesterday. I would call it classy, because it has a bit of length but is not too steep

As it allows me to head back into town via lasswade road which is another pig of a climb :)

Kaimes Road is the biggest scumbag of an Edinburgh hill I've met. The problem is you climb it and then immediately get a break, since there's not much else to do except go back down. Arthur's Seat is easier, but you can carry on hammering yourself on the flat.

Climbed 1347ft last night in 4 laps of arthurs seat and I assume another 1000 this morning with 3 laps. Starting to settle down into a nice rhythm of climbing but the really steep stuff really gets me as I'm pretty heavy. Getting a new stem for my bike shortly too which should move my position a bit further forward on the bike and help.

Polton Bank between Lasswade and Loanhead. Then over the Granites to Innerleithen - the Granites won't be as steep as the roads in the Pennines (I haven't checked the route, but I'd be surprised if they didn't throw a few 20%ers in, you know, for LOLs) but they're long - stick it in the big ring.

Further south, there's always Talla.

Thanks for these guys! Really appreciate it. Just bashed out a bunch of laps on Arthurs seat to check my gearing etc after weekend and feeling pretty good on the hills. Need something long to get my teeth into! Tempted to do a cycle down to newcastle in a couple weeks via Gala. It's a long tough hilly mid section but not too horrid all in all

So it turns out I've been signed up to this in a few weeks.... (the 19th August) . I'm assuming I did this in a moment of drunken camaraderie with a friend in June.

So I need to practice my hill climbs. Can anyone point me in the right direction to the nearest large steep hill climbs for me to do evening rides on. I live in Newington so south/east is better for me than west/north. But am willing to try!!!
