Apparently Londoners only get ~20 seconds.

http://www.camdennewjournal.com/news/2012/jul/police-investigate-kilburn-high-road-lorry-collision-which-left-83-year-old-hospital#.UBfI0nZzld4.twitter

I think its part of Boris' 'Speed up London' program where TfL are removing ped crossings and reducing the time other crossings get.

Just timed southbound Hanover/George junction.

1min 28 sec wait - red to green - which seems like a long wait. Peds crossing (one half) only waited 30 secs, which seems reasonable.

Didn't wait for a bus.

I times the waiting time to cross over George Street at Hanover yesterday and it took...wait for it...wait for it.....and keep waiting for it........

2 minutes and 2 seconds of waiting.

Presumably the council can make the claim it is much less than this by taking each leg of the wait as a separate crossing.

It then started to rain so I didn't hang around to do separate timings for each leg or crossing north to south.

"You can wait all day if you like at the lights beneath Cousland* as they don't detect bikes."

You have to weave around in front of the detection camera thingy. Then it will register you. You still have to wait your turn though.

"I reckon George St - Hanover must be over 1m40s"

Yeah I've been caught there a couple of times - not even at the start of the cycle.

Seems to take for ever.

Had assumed it would get sorted...

Must go back.

Wonder if it specially detects buses?

The ones in George Street have a ridiculously long wait. I haven't timed them. I tried once but got so bored waiting I just gave up. I should go back and do it some time.

"
The longest waits in Edinburgh include the Queen Street junction with Dundas Street and Hanover Street.

...

Local authorities decide the time between each green man phase at traffic lights. Glasgow City Council said it had a
maximum wait of one minute, 50 seconds – ten seconds
more than the maximum in Edinburgh.

I've never timed it but the KB corner lights (Mayfield Road / West Mains Road) seem to take a long time - you have to wait through three phases of traffic greens before the pedestrian one appears.

Back when I was much younger and lived in the west, the waits for green men in Glasgow always seemed fairly short. Consequently people mostly seemed to wait patiently for them at the side of the road. It was noticeable when I moved to Edinburgh that an unexpectedly large number of folk seemed to prefer to launch themselves casually into the traffic, and I figured that this was because of the long waits one had to endure at Edinburgh's pedestrian crossings before a green man would consent to light up. Sounds like Glasgow has gone backwards. Sad.

"
Those at the lights between Hope Street and St Vincent Street are faced with a wait of one minute and 50 seconds for the green man to appear.
