I'm pretty sure Sky / GB don't even go to the toilet without a wealth of scientific data from the wind tunnel to prove it will provide marginal gains.

Rumour around the time of Cav's world champs win was that he was the only member of the British squad under contract to Specialized, so the helmet made him stand out from the rest of the team. Shrinkwrap was meant to make him harder to spot and mark in the run up to the finish. For someone who spends the whole race drafting others and uses power and acceleration alone to push over the line in first place, it doesn't seem like a 1W aero advantage could be the reason behind the unusual decoration of his hat.

"Hmm. Maybe they provide lift instead? Make each rider a few grams lighter=shave a few more seconds off??"

For that we need some glowing wings like what was worn by those cyclists in the Olympics opening ceremony....

"My main problem with them is that they look silly."

This.

They annoyed me more than anything cos they just looked... wrong. And the Kask TT helmets look like they were original, shorter, H R Giger prototypes for the Alien head.

Must be good for baldies as well - keeps the sun off.

It's not just Kask doing it. After Cav had his shrink-wrapped Specialized helmet at the Worlds a lot of other manufacturers jumped in on it - Andre Greipel had a no-vent helmet at the Tour as well. My main problem with them is that they look silly.

@Gembo - you joke but I had a high velocity bee incident (high veloci-bee?) while out riding yesterday and it bloody hurt. Then later I got another one stuck in the vent and a fly in my ear. both resulting in much head shaking and "arrrrgh" - ing.

It was something that bugged me during the Tour - why did the Kask helmets of SKY have no vents, surely that gets too hot. So I asked on Twitter last night after seeing GB's women were also wearing them - apparently the closing of the vents is an aero saving of 1W...

To ensure they don't get too hot the helmet is actually resting slightly above the head, so the airflow is directed underneath and into the space between, then out vents that remain at the back.

All very technological and clever - I wonder what sort of time saving 1W equates to over a 150km race, and over a 3 week grand tour.

Need to sort myself out with a new helmet if I'm going to do more CX. My old one is six years old - perfectly serviceable, but I think 'cooling' technology has moved on since then, and one of the problems I had was an overheating heid (partly due to long hair which has now also been rectified). Of course, needs to be orange/black/white to match the cc racing kit... ;)
